Middlebury Police Log: Police probing break-in at store

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated a burglary at Middlebury Beef Supply on Route 7 South on July 29. Police said the culprit(s) broke in through a door at the south entrance. Once inside, the thieves stole cigarettes and other tobacco products from behind the register, according to police.

Authorities are reviewing surveillance equipment and have dusted for fingerprints in an effort to track down some suspects.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Middlebury police at 388-3191.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

• Investigated a report that four units at Exchange Street Storage had been broken into on July 23.

• Responded to a one-vehicle accident, with injuries, on Weybridge Street on July 23.

• Broke up a dispute between two groups of people near Two Brothers Tavern on Main Street on July 24. Police said a woman alleged that a man had assaulted her by repeatedly bumping into her on the dance floor at Two Brothers.

• Assisted a local man who said he had received threatening text messages from a local woman on July 24.

• Helped a Middlebury College visiting scholar who reported being the victim of bank fraud on July 24.

• Cited John R. Crowley, 29, of Bomoseen for disorderly conduct, following an incident at Porter Hospital on July 24.

• Responded, with Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association staff, to a Case Street residence on a report of a woman who had attempted to harm herself by overdosing on drugs on July 25. Police said the woman was given psychiatric help and taken to Porter Hospital.

• Received, from a good Samaritan, a wallet found on Court Street on July 25.

• Received a report that two gas cans had been stolen from a Creek Road residence on July 25.

• Responded to a report of two people screaming at each other behind the Dollar Store off Court Street Extension on July 25. Police encountered two drunken people who were picked up by a sober person.

• Helped a woman who reported receiving a threatening phone call on July 27.

• Cited Sean J. Bailey, 26, of Weybridge for driving with a suspended license and failing to register as a sex offender, following an investigation in a parking lot off Exchange Street on July 26.

• Turned three apparently intoxicated youths, seen walking on Court Street, over to sober adults on July 26.

• Responded to a report of fireworks being set off in the Foote Street area on July 26.

• Gave Court Diversion paperwork for underage drinking to three local juveniles who were not wanted on Middlebury College property on July 27.

• Served Court Diversion paperwork to a youth who had been drinking in the Old Chapel Road area on July 27.

• Warned a woman for violation of the town’s open container law on July 27.

• Received a complaint on July 28 from a local man who alleged that his neighbor had married “an illegal from Brazil” so he could remain in the country.

• Assisted a local woman who reported receiving threatening text messages from a man on July 28.

• Broke up a dispute between some Piper Road neighbors on July 28.

• Responded, with rescue officials, to a Case Street home where a woman had allegedly threatened to overdose on pills on July 28. Rescue officials took the woman to Porter Hospital.

• Received word on July 29 that the former tenant of a Mead Lane home had left three snakes behind after moving out.

• Took, to the Porter Hospital emergency room, a despondent woman found sitting behind Hannaford Supermarket, drinking alcohol. Police said the woman had consumed five bottles of malt liquor and said she wanted to “drink herself to death.”

• Cited Amanda Mahateck, 22, of Colchester and Eric H. Reindell, 21, of Williston for marijuana possession on July 29. Police said Mahateck had come into the police headquarters to retrieve found property when an officer detected “the odor of marijuana” coming from her. Police went out to the car in which she was riding and detected the odor of marijuana coming from its interior. Police said “Reindell and Mahateck handed (the investigating officer) marijuana from inside the car.”

• Responded, with local firefighters, to reports of smoke coming from the old grain bin off MacIntyre Lane on July 29.
