MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Ingrid Ecklein, 40, of Leicester for driving under the influence (second offense), leaving the scene of an accident, and careless/negligent operation of a motor vehicle, following an incident on Buttolph Drive on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 7:40 p.m. Police allege that Ecklein — operating a vehicle with a flat tire and only its emergency flasher lights on — sideswiped another vehicle and hit a few signs on Buttolph Drive.

Police said they got Ecklein to stop her vehicle in the Shaw’s Supermarket lot.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Received a report on Oct. 22 that an iPad had recently been stolen from the Mary Johnson Children’s Center.

•  Served a no-trespass order on a man who was acting “irate and unbalanced” at a physician’s office on Collins Drive on Oct. 22.

•  Assisted a local man on Oct. 22 who was apparently the victim of a dating site scam. Police said the man met a woman on the site (but never met her or spoke with her over the phone) and over the past year wired her — or the person pretending to be her — around $12,500. Police said the victim was also getting money deposited into his account by unknown people and in turn paying the woman at her request. The victim is turning bank receipts over to police, who continue to investigate the case.

•  Were informed of vandalism to an East Main Street resident’s mailbox on Oct. 22.

•  Contacted a family about a truant student on Oct. 23.

•  Received a report of a man who was going to get a rifle to shoot a bear that had climbed up a tree in the East Main Street area on Oct. 23.

•  Responded to a report of a tractor-trailer unit tipping over in Court Square on Oct. 23 around 3 p.m. Traffic was routed around the square for around three hours.

•  Responded to an untimely death report at a Buttolph Drive residence on Oct. 23. Police said Amy Gosselin, 56, had died of natural causes.

•  Cited Buck R. Mitchell, 20, of Bristol for violating the conditions of his release and violating a relief from abuse order, following an incident in the Shaw’s Supermarket parting lot on Oct. 23.

•  Responded to a noise complaint at a Valley View Drive residence on Oct. 24.

•  Responded to a trespassing complaint at Middlebury Union High School on Oct. 25.

•  Were informed that a student had left the Champlain Valley Academy campus in Catamount Park on Oct. 24. Police said the student had gone back to his home in Vergennes.

•  Investigated a report of a car striking and injuring a bicyclist at the intersection of Cross and Water streets on Oct. 24.

•  Responded to a report of a woman falling out of a moving vehicle on Route 7 South, near the A&W Restaurant, on Oct. 24.

•  Received a report of a boy’s bike being stolen from a Court Street residence on Oct. 24. Police said the bike was recovered in a damaged state near the Addison County Courthouse.

•  Assisted a local woman who had been the victim of a computer-related scam on Oct. 24. Police said the woman was told by phone that her computer was full of viruses. The caller — who the victim said spoke with an “Indian accent,” offered to fix the computer but said her warranty had run out and she needed to buy additional coverage for $139 for a three-year warranty. But the victim later learned that $400 had been charged to her credit card account.

•  Were informed of the theft of a banner from the Middlebury College campus on Oct. 25.

•  Assisted a local business that had been receiving harassing phone calls on Oct. 25.

•  Received a shoplifting complaint from Shaw’s Supermarket on Oct. 25. Store officials said a woman had left the store without paying for a box of wine and some cheese.

•  Received a report of a man and woman possibly snorting drugs through a dollar bill at the Subway Restaurant on Court Street on Oct. 25. Officials told police the pair had reddish eyes and “seemed aggravated.” They left the restaurant in a car with New York plates.

•  Investigated an apparent burglary attempt at Middlebury Beef Supply on Route 7 South on Oct. 26. A security camera revealed that a man wearing a hoodie had backed a sedan into a side glass door and left after the glass did not break. This is a technique matching some other recent burglaries throughout the state, according to police.

•  Ticketed two Middlebury Union Middle School Students for being in possession of tobacco after they were found to be in possession of chewing tobacco on campus on Oct. 26.
