Middlebury Police Log: Woman cited for simple assault

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Shawna Renee Thorpe, 31, of Middlebury for simple assault, following an alleged incident at a Route 7 North residence on Nov. 14.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a reported untimely death at a South Street Extension residence on Nov. 12. Police said the deceased — George Stabler, 69 — had died of natural causes.

•  Ticketed a Middlebury Union High School student for being a minor in possession of tobacco on campus on Nov. 12.

•  Served a no-trespass order on Nov. 12 on a man who was not wanted at a Jayne Court residence.

•  Served a temporary restraining order on a local man on Nov. 12.

•  Responded to a dispute between two men involving a car that was scrapped at the Wire Wheel on Route 7 South on Nov. 12.

•  Responded to a report of a vehicle-deer collision at the intersection of Route 7 and Happy Valley Road on Nov. 12.

•  Cited David E. Ashley of Middlebury and Andre S. Clark of New Haven, both 22, for possession of marijuana, following an incident in the Mill Street area on Nov. 13. Police said they saw the men smoking marijuana in a parked vehicle. A consent search uncovered 5.2 grams of marijuana in the vehicle, according to police.

•  Received a report from a Valley View Drive resident who alleged that her daughter had stolen some of her medication on Nov. 13.

•  Cited Kimberly Slicer-Wanke, 51, of Salisbury for retail theft following an alleged shoplifting incident at Hannaford Supermarket off Route 7 South on Nov. 13. Police allege that Slicer-Wanke left the store without paying for five greeting cards, some cosmetics and a block of cheese. Police said Slicer-Wanke told store officials she had forgotten to pay for the items, though store officials said they had video of her trying to conceal the items.

•  Received a report on Nov. 13 that someone stole four silver hubcaps off a vehicle parked off Court Street.

•  Investigated a report of some nuisance dogs in the Gorham Lane neighborhood on Nov. 13.

•  Warned a man about illegally dumping his trash into the Otter Creek Bakery dumpster on Nov. 15.

•  Served a temporary restraining order on a local man on Nov. 15.

•  Responded to report of  a disturbance at the Greystone Motel on Route 7 South on Nov. 15. Police said a lodger had refused to leave but ultimately paid to stay another night.

•  Received a report that an LG Expression cell phone had been stolen from a Middlebury Union Middle School student on Nov. 16.

•  Engaged in a brief chase of a vehicle that had been speeding on South Main Street on Nov. 17. Police said the officer stopped the pursuit when the vehicle speeded away on Route 30 outside of Middlebury in Cornwall. The vehicle eventually got into an accident, which was processed by the Vermont State Police, according to authorities.

•  Served a no-trespass order on Nov. 17 on a man who was allegedly trying to start fights with people at Two Brothers Tavern on Main Street on Nov. 17.

•  Served a no-trespass order on Nov. 17 on a man who allegedly tried to take a bottle of liquor from the Middlebury Inn.

•  Served a no-trespass order on a youth who had been drinking on Middlebury College grounds on Nov. 18. Police said the youth was also ticketed for underage drinking.

•  Took into protective custody a drunken non-student on Middlebury College campus on Nov. 18.

•  Responded to a report of a fight between two men off Court Street on Nov. 18.

•  Assisted in the evacuation of Shaw’s Supermarket off Washington Street after report of a propane leak on Nov. 18. Police cordoned off Court Square for at least an hour around 6:30 p.m. while fire department officials inspected a reported gas leak in the neighborhood, that proved to be unfounded.

•  Placed a distraught man in touch with the Counseling Service of Addison County on Nov. 19.
