Vergennes Police Log: Authorities investigate suspicious vehicle that may have tie to break-ins

VERGENNES — Vergennes police recently handled a mix of traffic stops, quarrels, suspicious vehicles, thefts and requests for help from the Vermont State Police.

Between March 4 and 10, Vergennes police:

•  On March 4 looked into a report of a suspicious vehicle on Panton Road, an incident that remains under investigation for possible ties to recent home break-ins in the area.

•  On March 4 tried unsuccessfully to reach the owner of a vehicle that had been left at a New Haven Road business; the motorcycle was later removed.

•  On March 4 while returning from Middlebury called the Bristol Rescue Squad and VSP to help a woman found slumped behind the wheel of a car on the side of Route 7.

•  On March 4 helped a motorist get into a locked car on Monkton Road.

•  On March 4 looked unsuccessfully for a suspicious vehicle on Bowman Road.

•  On March 5 assisted the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad at a call made at Champlain Farms.

•  On March 5 backed up VSP at two traffic stops, one on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh because there was possibly a firearm in the vehicle, and one on Route 22A in Panton at which the department’s Drug Recognition Expert determined there was cause for VSP to charge a driver with driving under the influence of marijuana. VSP also charged the driver with marijuana possession after the latter stop.

•  On March 5 referred a case of possible inappropriate sexual contact with a minor to VSP because the alleged offenses had occurred in Waltham and Middlebury.

•  On March 5 dealt with a case of a woman reporting a phone threat in which a man said he would damage a First Street resident’s car if she did not return a Kindle. The man told police that it was stolen, while the woman claimed it had been lent to her. Police told the man to report the item stolen to VSP.

•  On March 6 looked in Addison for a suspicious car on behalf of VSP; it was gone when police arrived.

•  On March 6 issued a no-trespass order to a man making harassing phone calls to Vergennes Video employees.

•  On March 6 checked the welfare of a First Street woman, who was found to be OK.

•  On March 7 were told a male student had left Vergennes Union High School; police were soon told the student had been found.

•  On March 7 dealt with a verbal dispute between two women on Meigs Road that centered on the outstanding balance on a phone card.

•  On March 8 told a landlord that damage done to an apartment by a former tenant was a civil issue.

•  On March 8 asked the mortgage holder of a Thomas Circle home being foreclosed upon to secure the property because people were entering the home and drinking in it.

•  On March 8 received a tip about illegal drug activity in the area.

•  On March 8 met with VUHS administrators about ongoing parking problems during events there and discussed signs that would make enforcement easier and keep fire lanes open.

•  On March 9 helped VSP at an underage drinking party in Shoreham.

•  On March 9 picked up about four dozen hypodermic needles that had been dumped in the trash of a Main Street business.

•  On March 9 went to Ferrisburgh to help VARS deal with a patient who had been thrown from a horse.

•  On March 9 were told by a UTC Aerospace official that wooden pallets had been stolen from the Panton Road property.

•  On March 9 escorted the VUHS boys’ basketball team bus along with city fire and rescue vehicles as the bus made a victory tour of the city.

•  On March 9 contacted the driver of a suspicious car on Hillside Drive and found there was no problem.

•  On March 10 calmed an arguing couple at the intersection of Green Street and New Haven Road.

•  On March 10 began investigating the theft from a South Maple Street home of five rifles, a shotgun and a pistol.

•  On March 10 backed up VSP during a Route 22A traffic stop.

•  On March 10 checked the welfare of a MacDonough Drive resident, who was found to be OK.
