PHILIP PIERCE

MIDDLEBURY — Philip James Pierce, 19, passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 9, 2017 while visiting Boston and intrepidly exploring its neighborhoods. Philip was the cherished son of Elizabeth Gander (Middlebury) and Dean L. Pierce (Shelburne) and the much-loved younger brother of Nellie Pierce.

GRANT LEFEVRE

RUTLAND — Grant Reid Lefevre, age 64, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, at his home in Rutland, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Grant was born in Mount Kisco, N.Y. on July 27, 1952. He was the son of Edwin and Charlotte (Chotsie) (Griffith) Lefevre of East Dorset. He was a graduate of Burr & Burton, class of 1970. He had worked as a welder in the construction industry most of his life. More recently he had worked as a Nurse’s Aide for T.L.C. out of Burlington. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and people. Grant was a people person.

ANNA WELCH

VERGENNES — Anna Patricia Johnson Welch passed away at her home, the Cedars on the shore of Lake Champlain, on Jan. 7, 2017. She was born in Springfield, Vt. on Oct. 29, 1927. “Pat” attended Springfield schools, the College of William and Mary and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Banking, Finance and Insurance. She worked at the Shawmut Bank in Boston, Mass. until marrying Stephen Townsend Welch of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield, Vt. on June 27, 1953.

PAUL VAILLANCOURT

MIDDLEBURY — Paul Emile Vaillancourt, 71, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

He was born April 25, 1945, in Middlebury, Vt., the son of Archie and Leonie (Berthiaume) Vaillancourt.

Paul was raised on the family dairy farm in West Salisbury. After his father’s death, he took over the family farm and ran it for many years. Paul eventually stopped farming and became a steward of the land. In later years, he also owned a car washing business.

CHARLES STEARNS

FERRISBURGH — Charles P. Stearns, 69, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2017 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

He was born Sept. 27, 1947 in Burlington, the son of the late Elwin and Lucy (Ryder) Stearns.

He was an avid outdoorsman and farmer, enjoyed socializing at the local diner, working at Job Corps and transporting the students.

JULIA CURTIS

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. — Julia Field Curtis, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 7, 2017.

Julia was born on Nov. 10, 1924 in Ferrisburg, Vt. She was the devoted daughter to George and Marion Field.

HILDA THAYER

BURLINGTON — On Dec. 21, 2016, winter solstice, Hilda L. Thayer of Burlington, Vt. passed away peacefully at the home of her son Greg and his wife Barb. She was 97 years of age.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Hilda will always be remembered for her courage, dignity and grace. A woman of boundless energy, kindness and generosity, she was also a devout Catholic, with an abiding faith that guided her with resilience through the triumphs and travails of life.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
