NEW HAVEN — William Martin Simmons (born Sept. 25, 1953), devoted father, son, partner and sibling, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 9, 2017, in New Haven, Vt.

MIDDLEBURY — Barbara J. Moodie, 67, passed away peacefully at her residence in Middlebury on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017.

She was born May 3, 1949 in Middlebury, the daughter of George Foster Sr. and Jean (Huntress) Foster.

WILLIAM HOADLEY

BRISTOL — William Neal Hoadley, 92, passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017 in Schenectady, N.Y. following a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 12, 1924 in Rutland, Vt., the son of William O. and Gertrude K. Hoadley of Middletown Springs, Vt. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters: Beverly Lannetti, Marian Jean Quinn and Gail Bissonnette.

Neal served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean War.

He graduated with a bachelor of arts from Tufts University and a M.Ed. from Boston University.

KEY LARGO, Fla. — Barbara Gross Goodman of Key Largo, Fla., passed away on Jan. 29, 2017 in Middlebury, Vt. of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. She was 81.

SHOREHAM — Madeleine Audet Dubois, 87, passed away Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017 at the home of her daughter, Suzanne and Neal Palmer, in Shoreham, surrounded by her family. She was born Oct. 10, 1929 in Shoreham, the daughter of Amedee and Cordila (Dutil) Audet.

WINFRED COUSINO

BRISTOL — Winfred (Fred) H. Cousino, 88, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2017 at Porter Medical Center.

He was born in Bristol, June 21, 1928 the son of John W. and Ruth (Brooks) Cousino. He was a member of St. Ambrose Church and a member of The Knights of Columbus.

Winfred worked for many companies throughout his life primarily in building maintenance, including Bristol Landfill, Drake Smith Co., Fletcher Allen Hospital and retired from Mount Abe High School in 1993.

KATHERINE SCHMIDT

EAST MIDDLEBURY — Katherine Schmidt passed away on January 11, 2017 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born Katherine Alice Gindele to Herbert V. and Josephine Clarkson Gindele on July 23, 1922 and spent her formative years in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Her husband, Carl Louis Schmidt, died in 1992.

PINEHURST, N.C. — Mrs. Anne Smith VanderWolk, 93, passed away peacefully on Jan. 31, 2017 at home in the Country Club of North Carolina with her family present.

Born in Ambridge, Pa. to Ralph and Thelma Smith, she attended Sewickley Academy, Ogontz School in Jenkintown, Pa., and National Park Junior College in Silver Spring, Md.

VERGENNES — Sharon Ann (Bergeron) Therrien, 64, of Vergennes, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017 at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 18, 1952 in Burlington, the daughter of the late Gerald and Hazel (Reynolds) Bergeron. Sharon graduated from Burlington High School in 1971. Shortly thereafter Sharon married the love of her life, Douglas Therrien, and the two eventually moved to Vergennes and started a family.

HARRY SURPRISE

FERRISBURGH — Harry Charles Surprise, 74, passed away at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

He was born June 19, 1942, the son of Howard and Jenny (Hastings) Surprise.

Harry is survived by his sister Norma Raymond; and brothers Leonard and wife Carolyn and Benjamin Surprise; several nephews and nieces; good friends John and Jean Roberts; and his cat Buddy. He was predeceased by his parents; sister Hilda Surprise; brothers Howard, Jr., Herbert and Albert Surprise; and sister-in-law Janice Surprise.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
