JOHN EGNER JR.

MIDDLEBURY — John Edmund Egner Jr. of Middlebury, Vt., passed away on July 13 at the age of 80.

SCOT BRADLEY SHERWIN

BRISTOL — Scot Bradley Sherwin, 59, of Bristol, Vt., and Ormond Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully on July 12, 2013, after a courageous battle with interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, while at Fletcher Allen Health Care. Scot was surrounded and comforted by his beloved family and friends. 

He was born in Middlebury, the son of Paul Sherwin and the late Patricia Rockwood, and raised by the late Alma and John Sherwin, his grandparents.

CHRISTOPHER V. SMITH

NEW CANAAN, Conn./MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Christopher V. Smith, 71, a longtime resident of New Canaan, Conn., and Addison County, Vt., passed away peacefully at home in New Canaan on July 7, 2013, after a long illness. He was a graduate of New Canaan Country School (1957), The Choate School (1960), and Middlebury College (1965). In business, he worked in New York City for Irving Trust Company and its successor organization, Bank of New York, for 32 years before retiring in 1997.

JAN OLSON FLOYD

RANDOLPH CENTER, Vt. — Jan Olson Floyd, 67, peacefully passed away on Monday, July 1, 2013, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.

NORMA HILL

DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. — Norma Betts Hill died peacefully at age 90 while sleeping in her Home in Downingtown, Pa., on June 30, 2013.

She was born in New Haven, Vt., on Dec. 17, 1922.

MARGARET SEARS

FERRISBURGH — Margaret M. Sears of Ferrisburgh died peacefully at her home on July 3, 2013, at the age of 82.

She is survived by her children, Darrell, Michelle (Phil), Mark (Penny), Michael (Jody), Lynette (Michael) and Lester (Kimi); 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A special thanks to “Miss Maggie’s” angel, Darlene Stark, for her loving care to Maggie over the last months of her life.

BARBARA DANIELS

RUTLAND — Barbara A. Daniels, 78, of Rutland died on July 4, 2013, at Rutland Regional Health Care after a short illness.

She was born on Dec. 27, 1934, in Queens, New York City, the daughter of Wilfred and Harriet Rogers. She lived in Queens, in Massapequa, N.Y., and in Leesburg, Fla., with her mother. While there she helped keep house and enjoyed doing ceramics, needlework and riding her three-wheeled bicycle.

RUBY CARLSTROM

BRISTOL — Ruby A. Carlstrom, 94, of Bristol died peacefully at home on July 3, 2013.

She was born in Kirby on Feb. 13, 1919, the daughter of Frank and Pearl Labounty.

She is survived by two daughters, Jackie Aube of Bristol and Stacey Miller of Salisbury. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Frederic Carlstrom.

Her relatives say she was a devoted mother and grandmother who truly loved her family and in turn was adored by them.

THOMAS HIER

BRISTOL — Thomas P. “Tom” Hier, 75, of Bristol died peacefully on July 5, 2013. He was the youngest child of Agnes (Cousino) Hier and William R. Hier. He was born on Jan. 1, 1938, at home on School Street in Bristol.

He lived most of his life with his parents. After his parents were unable to care for him due to age, he then lived at the men’s group home in Middlebury. As he aged, he then moved in with his cousin and caregiver, Peter Cousino, at the Cousino family home.

STEVEN ORVIS

BRISTOL — Steven Casey Orvis, 26, of Bristol died July 4, 2013.

He was born April 4, 1987, in Burlington, the son of Gerald Orvis and Cheryl Faircloth.

He attended Lyndon State College and graduated in December 2011 with a bachelor’s degree. He majored in exercise science and minored in physical education.

His family says he enjoyed sports, baseball and football, and was an avid fan of the Braves and his favorite college basketball team, Duke.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
