DONALD HAGEN

MIDDLEBURY — Donald J. Hagen Jr., 59, of Middlebury, died unexpectedly on Aug. 14, 2013.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 17, 1954. He graduated from Island Trees High School on Long Island in 1972. He attended Nassau Community College for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served during the Vietnam War and was released with an honorable discharge.

After working for York Industries in Garden City, N.Y., he relocated to Vermont.

JOHN RUNYON

MIDDLEBURY — John Lewis Runyon died Saturday, Aug. 17, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury, following a short and aggressive bout with recurrent melanoma.

He was born Oct. 31, 1930, in Glen Ridge, N.J., the son of Mefford Ross Runyon and Janet Benson, both of New Jersey.

THOMAS WARD

SHELBURNE — Thomas Edward Ward, Jr., 88, died after a brief illness on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at his home at Wake Robin, Shelburne, Vt. surrounded by family.

He was born in 1925, in Flushing, N.Y., to Thomas and Edith (Smythe) Ward. He graduated from Kent School in Kent, Conn. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, he graduated from Yale University in 1950 and attended the Colorado School of Mines.

DONALD HAGEN

MIDDLEBURY — Donald J. Hagen Jr., 59, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, at his residence in Middlebury. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

SAMUEL "SAM" ADAMS

CONOVER, N.C. — Samuel Walker “Sam” Adams, 26, of Conover, N.C., died at home of his own hands on Saturday, Aug. 3.  He livedin Middlebury from 1987 to 2002.

A graduate of Bridge School, he attended both Middlebury junior and senior high schools before moving to North Carolina.

His family says he loved his dog, camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains and attending college. He never outgrew his love of history and reading.

RUTH GOULD

TURNERS FALLS, Mass. — Ruth F. Gould, 87, of Turners Falls, Mass., died Saturday morning, Aug. 10, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Marlboro, Vt., on March 1, 1926, the daughter of Merrill and Florence (Herrick) Allen. She was educated in Marlboro and Townshend, Vt., schools.

She married Raymond Gould on March 3, 1946, in Vernon, Vt. He predeceased her in 2003.

MYRON HUNT

AMHERST, N.Y. — Myron Hunt, shopping center industry pioneer who built two shopping centers in Middlebury, Vt., died on July 30, 2013, at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. He was 87.

VIRGINIA MERRILL

MIDDLEBURY — Virginia Merrill, 32, died unexpectedly Aug. 6, 2013. She was born Oct. 9, 1980, to Margaret Merrill and the late Leo Merrill of Middlebury.

She graduated from Middlebury Union High School and attended Johnson State College.

Virginia’s passion was cooking and she pursued that career in both Vermont and New York.

She was predeceased by her grandmother Judith Sinnock.

JEAN SAGUI

STAUNTON, Va. — Jean Pratt Sagui, 87, died peacefully at her home in Staunton, Va., on Aug. 8, 2013, surrounded by her husband, George, and her children. Born on May 9, 1926, in Bayonne, N.J., the daughter of Raymond and Veronica (Mullen) Pratt. Jean’s father died suddenly when she was 7 years old. Her mother, Veronica, remarried John Cortez when Jean was 16 years old and the family relocated to Spring Lake, N.J. While attending Manasquan High School Jean met the love of her life, George. Later they were affectionately known to one another as “Molly and Sam.”

FERLAND ADAMS

VERGENNES — Ferland Bernard Adams, 96, of Vergennes died peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at Green Mountain Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Colchester.

He was born June 21, 1917, in his grandparents’ home, on Foote Street in Middlebury. He was the son of Harold and Corintha (Ferland) Adams.

As a child he resided in Alburg, later moving back to Middlebury. He was a graduate of Middlebury High School in 1935.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
