LOIS MCCAFFERTY

VERGENNES — Lois H. McCafferty, 87, of Vergennes, formerly of Hazelwood, Pa., died Nov. 21, 2014, at home with her daughter and family.

She was a dedicated nurse for many years in Pittsburgh, Pa.

She is survived by six children, Lee Dains of Pennsylvania, Art Adams of Vermont, Linda Badstibner of Pennsylvania, Candy Schmidt of Vermont, Mike Adams of Pennsylvania, and Helen Koontz of West Virginia; a sister, Rita Urquhart of Florida; a sister-in-law, Greta Glatch of Pennsylvania; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

SHIRLEY OXIDINE

ASTORIA, Ore. — Shirley A. Oxidine, 66, formerly of Shoreham and Castleton, Vt., died Wednesday evening, Nov. 19, 2014, at home under hospice care after more than a year-long struggle with ALS. 

She was born June 22, 1948, in San Francisco, Calif., raised in San Diego, and educated at San Francisco State and the California Institute for Integral Studies, earning her Psy.D. in 2001. Immediately following receipt of her degree she moved to Castleton with her spouse, Annie Dolber; in 2011 they moved to Shoreham.

DALE BROWN

FOREST DALE — Dale Louise Brown, 64, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Leicester on Oct. 9, 1950. She was the daughter of Harold and Aleida (Cole) Sears. She grew up in Leicester and received her early education in Leicester Central School.

GAIL WITTES

BATAVIA, Ohio — Gail M. Wittes, 62, of Batavia, Ohio, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at her home.

She was born in Keene, N.H., on Sept. 7, 1952, the daughter of Russell W. and Joan L. Howard. She married John A. Wittes Jr. on Dec. 24, 1976, in Salamanca, N.Y.

DAVID GALE

GOSHEN — David Goodsell Gale, age 76, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at his home of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. David was born March 1, 1938, in Burlington, Vt., to Hilton and Narcissa (Goodsell) Gale. He grew up enjoying summers on Lake Champlain with his mother and father, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. He graduated from Richmond High School and earned a Master of Arts in History from the University of Vermont. He taught social studies at Enosburg Falls High School for 3 years and Otter Valley Union High School in Brandon for 36 years.

JEANETTE ROWE

PITTSFORD — Jeanette Cole Rowe, age 80, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2014, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Rowe was born in Proctor on Jan. 6, 1934. She was the daughter of Moses and Julia (Ladouceur) Desabrais. She grew up in Proctor and Salisbury where she received her early education and was a member of Middlebury High School class of 1952.

CORA SPAULDING

VERGENNES — Cora Isabel Spaulding of Vergennes, Vt., died at her home at the age of 103 on Nov. 13, 2014.

Cora was born in Panton, Vt., on Oct. 21, 1911, the youngest daughter of John and Sarah Allen Spaulding. She is survived by cousins, William and Caroline Edmunds, South Burlington, Vt., and Elizabeth Edmunds Stempel, Burlington, Vt. Two sisters, Helen and Luella, predeceased Cora.

EDITH ANN (VALENTINE) TOWSLEY

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. — Edith Ann (Valentine) Towsley, 66, formerly of Bristol, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

Edie was born on Nov. 7, 1948, daughter of Bernard and Esther Valentine.

Edith enjoyed being outdoors, bird watching, long walks, going to dinner, traveling, spending winters in Florida, shopping and spending time with her family.

Edie was an LPN at Bennington Health & Rehabilitation Center.

HAZEL S. DEVINO

BRISTOL — Hazel S. Devino, age 102, a resident of the Bristol community for over 77 years, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, at her home.

Hazel was born on June 27, 1912, to Frank and Edith Ladabouche in Fair Haven, the second oldest of 14 children. She spent early years there and moved to Burlington as a young adult where she met and married Rollie E. Devino on Oct. 28, 1934.

CASEY FREEGUARD

WHITING — Casey E. Freeguard, 31, of Whiting died Monday evening, Nov. 10, 2014, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington after a brief illness.

Born Jan. 31, 1983, in Middlebury, he was the son of Gary E. and Lori L. (Fagga) Freeguard.

He was a graduate of Otter Valley High School, class of 2001. He was self-employed in the concrete construction field, operating Casey Freeguard Concrete.

His family says he enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, hunting, gardening and spending time with his daughter.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
