THOMAS C. SHEPARD

BRISTOL — Thomas C. Shepard, 61, of Bristol passed away Friday, March 6, 2015, at his home after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

He was born October 30, 1953, in Middlebury, Vt., the son of Charles and Rosamond Smith Shepard. In 1980, Tom married the former Jane Coffey. Tom worked most of his life as a carpenter, building many homes in the area. In recent years, he also sold firewood. Tom enjoyed raising animals on their small family farm and gardening. His happiest times were spent with his family.

MARTHA EVARTS

NEW HAVEN — Martha G. Evarts, 88, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Jan. 6, 1927, in Randolph, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Louise (Wheeler) Abel.

She married Vance F. Evarts Sr.

Her family says she enjoyed giving piano lessons in her earlier years and was an avid reader. She enjoyed her flower gardens and also watching DVD movies.

She is survived by her sons, Alan Evarts and his companion Janet Welch; Craig Evarts; and Vance F. Evarts Jr.; and by two grandchildren.

CORNWALL — Eileen Mary Craig McQuillan died at her home on March 4, 2015, in Cornwall, after a short illness, with her family at her side.

She was born June 18, 1937, in Newtown, Conn., daughter of the late James and Agnes (Johnson) Craig.

She was married in August of 1959 to William McQuillan, also of Newtown, Conn. The McQuillans had five children: Madeleine, William, Peter, Maureen and Patrick.

THOMAS ANGIER

WILLISTON — Thomas Angier passed away from a chronic illness on Feb. 25, 2015, at the young age of 51. Tom was born on April 11, 1963, the youngest son of Madeleine Bourdon Angier and J. Francis Angier. He grew up on the family farm in Addison and graduated from Vergennes Union High School in 1981. He resided most of his life in Addison County but had also lived in Florida and Colorado.

ERNEST BETOURNAY

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Ernest J. Betournay died March 2, 2015, at the Chula Vista Veterans Home in Chula Vista, Calif., at the age of 102.

He was born in Montreal, Canada, and moved to Shoreham, Vt., when he was 16. He also lived in Panton, Vt. He was a World War II veteran and was decorated with several medals and a Purple Heart.

He leaves behind two daughters, Judy Danyow and husband John, and Joanne Levesque and husband Roy; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Two sons, Richard and Robert, predeceased him.

JAMES M. LECOMPTE

MIDDLEBURY — James M. LeCompte, 51, fought a long and courageous battle with kidney disease and died peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015.

Born March 12, 1963, in Middlebury the son of Arvery and Nancy (Grant) LeCompte.

James loved his cat Sparky and also enjoyed fishing, camping, bingo and spending time with family and friends.

Jan. 15, 1944, she married Irvin Senecal in Brandon. They moved to Whiting in 1956 and then to Middlebury in 1986. He predeceased her May 15, 2007.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
