Letter to the editor: Climate group sets meeting

Posted on April 18, 2019 |
By Fran Putnam

I am happy to see the increasingly robust coverage in this paper of the many aspects of the looming climate emergency. Angelo Lynn’s editorial, “The Biggest Issue of our Times,” makes it clear that he is tuned in to what is going on both in our community and worldwide. We are long past the point where any reasonable person can deny that the world we live in has already been deeply changed by human activity. The question is, what can we do now?

Letter to the editor: Neighbors Together working to help downtown Midd

Posted on April 18, 2019 |
By Amy Hastings

Having recently spent several weeks in the deep south of our country, I was frequently reminded of what deserted small downtowns look like. They’re all over and we certainly don’t want to imagine that happening here. But, as Middlebury’s railroad construction continues and intensifies, as a recent writer wrote, we’re going to have to “pull together as a community.” If we don’t, perhaps we might risk some unimaginable losses to our downtown.

Note of appreciation: Community helped Bridport suppers succeed

Posted on April 18, 2019 |
By Barb Wagner and Katie Welch

The 11th year of the Bridport Community Supper program has ended for the 2018-2019 winter season. Our suppers are provided free of charge to the community every Friday night at the Bridport Grange Hall from December through March.

Wow what a rewarding season! Barb and I once again enjoyed seeing old friends and making new ones. Thank you to the following sponsors for their continued support and to those who were new in helping this year. Without their support these supper would not be possible. They all play their part in helping build a stronger community:

Guest editorial: Paid leave is a good idea, but the devil is in the details

Posted on April 15, 2019 |
By Emerson Lynn

The Vermont House last week passed another iteration of a mandatory statewide paid family leave program on a 92-52 vote. It’s a more modest bill than was first anticipated, testament to the fact that making the numbers work is difficult, politically and practically. The 92 votes in favor are still eight shy of the number required to override a veto should Gov. Phil Scott decide to do so.

Letter to the editor: Thought of closing ACSD schools is difficult, sad

Posted on April 15, 2019 |
By Wendy Leeds

In recent and ongoing meetings at MUHS, a community dialogue continues about the challenges of declining enrollment and fiscal responsibility. The task before the ACSD Board and steering committee is daunting and disturbing. Participants have the opportunity right now to weigh in on big decisions that will be made in coming months. Closing 1-6 of our elementary schools is a very real option on the table.

Letter to the editor: Time to weigh in on the fate of schools

Posted on April 15, 2019 |
By John Wetzel

Last week I attended a ACSD Facilities Master Plan Meeting and I want to encourage all who care about our schools to attend the next one on Wednesday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m. If you are from a small school outside of Middlebury, it is of particular importance, as all the options proposed by the board included closing at least one of our elementary schools (all the way up to closing all but one school).

Letter to the editor: Payroll tax for family leave is regressive, unfair

Posted on April 15, 2019 |
By Catherine Braun

I was born and raised in Manhattan. My family lived in a housing project on the lower east side.

My parents were able to get our apartment due to my father’s status as a returning veteran.

The tradition that was strongest in our home was political and social awareness and activism.

Editorial: Why it's savvy for Gov. Scott to OK a climate bill, gas tax

Posted on April 11, 2019 |
By Angelo Lynn

Last spring, Gov. Phil Scott sent shock waves throughout Vermont and the country when he proposed and later signed — as a Republican governor — legislation that put modest restrictions on some gun sales. He won over a lot of Vermont moderates with that single stroke, and it remains a measure of Vermont’s bipartisanship that reasonable legislation can become law.

Ways of Seeing by Barbara Clearbridge: Why isn't the good stuff in the news?

Posted on April 11, 2019 |
By Barbara Clearbridge

Clearbridge photo 2019 BW.jpg

I listen to the radio rather than watch television. Now, however, I am fasting almost entirely from conventional radio newscasts. I want, I need, hopeful news, inspiring news, or at least relevant news. I see no reason why radio newscasts have to be nearly entirely about tragedies or relative wealth, especially when the vast majority of us aren’t impacted by the subjects of these reports. Many stories are simply irrelevant.

I have actually heard these stories over the past several months:

“Small plane crash in Texas, 6 killed.”

Jessie Raymond: Some books' popularity a mystery

Posted on April 11, 2019 |
By Jessie Raymond

jessenew ONLINE.jpg

I recently started thinking about writing a murder mystery set in Vermont.

I know nothing about writing mysteries, or fiction of any kind, for that matter. And I really only read classic British “cozies” — Agatha Christie, P.D. James and that crowd. I’m not sure my familiarity with early-20th-century English villages, with their glut of vicarages and parlor maids, would help me write a contemporary New England mystery.
