Letter to the editor: Bill would aid small firms

Posted on April 19, 2018 |
By Matt Birong

Tax day — and often the week that leads up to it — can be a point of stress and uncertainty for many as they scramble to pull together document after document, chasing down one person for one filing and another person for another.

Editorial: Bottom line on minimum wage

Posted on April 19, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Bill H.302 — currently within the jurisdiction of the House Committee on General, Housing & Military Affairs — calls for raising the state’s minimum wage from the current $10.50 per hour to $15 per hour by 2026. A similar bill, S.40, passed the Senate back in mid-February. Even if supporters pass the House bill, and compromise legislation is reached with the Senate in time to send a bill to Gov. Scott’s desk, the governor has misgivings about the initiative and has said in the past that he would veto the legislation.

Editorial: Needless nastiness in Vermont

Posted on April 19, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

In a nod to the journalistic admonishment to always read past the headline (which is particularly troublesome in today’s era of reading just headlines, Twitter feeds and shout-outs on social media), there’s the story of Gov. Phil Scott meanly vetoing a bill that “regulates children’s exposure to toxic chemicals.” I mean, how could he! Everyone wants to limit children’s exposure to harmful substances; why not Vermont’s governor? And he seems so rational on so many other issues, like gun control.

Exactly.

Letter to the editor: Proposed boost in logging won't help Camel's Hump

Posted on April 16, 2018 |
By David Brynn

Camel’s Hump is an absolute gem. However, the DRAFT Forest Resource Management Plan suggests significantly increased logging. Why?

It is time to take a different approach that puts more emphasis on forest ecosystem conservation and less emphasis on timber harvest, over-developed recreation, and human control.

Letter to the editor: Evidence of Trump's incompetence builds

Posted on April 16, 2018 |
By Alexander Lyall

Those who identify with a Trumpian world should possess sufficient awareness to recognize a problem. How much more evidence will it take? An imbecile-in-chief could be survived were he elected Scout Master of the local troop. Scout Masters, of course, generally possess a moral compass and do not have access to nuclear codes.

Editorial: Addressing our cultural failure

Posted on April 16, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

The rule of law doesn’t always follow what appears to be common sense. In the Jack Sawyer case, for example, the Vermont Supreme Court ruled that just because the 18-year-old wrote in his journal that he was planning to carry out a mass shooting at his former high school in Fair Haven, Vt., that was not enough evidence to hold him without bail on attempted murder charges.

Jessie Raymond: Growing flax puts new spin on linen

Posted on April 12, 2018 |
By Jessie Raymond

jessenew ONLINE.jpg

This year, I’m growing flax. Not for flowers, not for flaxseed, but for fiber to make linen; you know, like they did in the olden days.

Humor me. This is the kind of thing I do.

I’ve always had this weird fascination with learning obsolete skills once used on the homestead.  According to my psychic, this isn’t surprising; in a past life I was assistant manager of the Sturbridge Village gift shop.

Greg Dennis: A bolt from the (Chevy) blue

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

If you believe, as many of us do, that climate change means our children will live in a more dangerous and chaotic world, then at some point you’ve got to look in the mirror and wonder about the car you’re driving.

Transportation accounts for Vermont’s greatest contribution to climate change. Carbon pollution from cars and (especially) trucks means that for every historically destructive hurricane — think Puerto Rico — every driver is driving those storms to be a little bigger.
