Letters to the Editor: Already clear that bridge project is too much medicine

Posted on June 22, 2017 |
By Ann LaFiandra

Thank you, Donna Donahue and Patrick Stine, for your letters to the editor in support of rethinking the scope of the two in town bridge replacements.

Barely a few weeks into a four-year project (or possibly longer due to unplanned developments along the way), I can’t help but wonder why Middlebury needs open heart surgery when two stents would do.

Posted on June 19, 2017 |

The state’s 2018 fiscal year hasn’t started yet, and already the administration is considering cuts. Vermonters deserve to know what’s at stake and have a chance to consider alternatives.

Letters to the Editor: Essentials first in bridge project

Posted on June 19, 2017 |
By Patrick Stine

Major surgery is underway for our town. The surgical plan is very complex, trying to answer present and future needs and trying to do it all in a single operation.

In my participation in major operations that required coordination among diverse specialties, unexpected intraoperative challenges can so burden the outcome that everyone regrets acceding to the idea that all surgical goals be accomplished in a single trip to the OR. There are limits to how long you can safely keep an elderly patient under anesthesia.

Legislative Review, Chris Bray: Vetoes set state towards July 1 shut down

Posted on June 19, 2017 |
By Sen. Christopher Bray

Earlier this month, Gov. Scott vetoed both of the state’s “must-pass” bills — the budget and the tax bill. His vetoes set us on a course for a shut down of state government on July 1.

This did not need to happen, however, and the governor’s vetoes are both surprising and disappointing.

Jan Demers, Bridging gaps, building futures: Have you ever asked yourself if you can relate to poverty?

Posted on June 19, 2017 |
By Jan Demers

Can you relate to poverty?

We had moved to another state so that my husband could work on his Master’s Degree. He was making $35 a week. Housing came with a job he had taken while at Boston University and we were paying our bills. How, I don’t know. What I do know is how to make a chicken last a week for a family of four. First you roast it. The next day you make a casserole from what is left. After that, the bones are boiled for a good long time and you make soup.

Editorial: Is merging ACSD sixth-graders into MUMS the right move, now?

Posted on June 15, 2017 |
By Angelo Lynn

Whether you think sixth grade students within the Addison Central School District (ACSD) should be merged into MUMS (Middlebury Union Middle School) or stay with their respective elementary schools within the seven towns, what’s important about the question is that it’s focused on academics and improving them for area students. It’s not a question about whether taxpayers can afford the budget, or teacher salaries and benefits, but rather how students can best be served.

That’s refreshing.

Posted on June 15, 2017 |
By Pedie O’Brien

As most Salisbury residents know, the selectboard set up an Ad Hoc Landfill Committee for the purpose of researching the possibility of closing the Salisbury landfill based on a non-binding vote in 2015. The members of this committee are Martha Sullivan (selectboard chair), Pedie O’Brien (committee chair and landfill administrator), Sid Hutchins (landfill operator), and David Nuceder, Kip Andres and Sheila Conroy (interested citizens).

Letters to the Editor: Salisbury crash puts spotlight on road safety

Posted on June 15, 2017 |
By Ian Ross

The April car crash that killed a 40-year old man hits home and a nerve for me. While I did not personally know him, some friends of my family were close to him. More to the point, I am almost 36 and have three young daughters of my own. I usually strive to be a safe driver, even more so since my oldest child was born. My wife has even been known to call me grandpa on the road.
