Letter to the editor: Water bottles not eco-friendly

Posted on June 13, 2019 |
By Jean Bergeson

I was interested to see the photograph of the Middlebury College students passing the water bottles during graduation. Could they not manage to last for the length of the ceremony without needing to hydrate? Middlebury is, after all, supposed to be a green campus, so 500 or so water bottles does not help with that dream.

Guest editorial: Increased childcare funding yields social, economic gains

Posted on June 10, 2019 |
By Walter Frame

Of all the competing funding priorities debated this legislative session in Montpelier, increased investments in child care rose to the top for good reason. The $7.4 million child care package included in the budget is one of the biggest investments the Capitol made this year. It is also one that could yield incredible economic and social returns for Vermont.

Letter to the editor: Let's keep Vermont free of nuclear bombers

Posted on June 10, 2019 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

On May 16th, I sent this e-mail message to Senators Hardy and Bray.

“I am a Quaker. I live in Bristol, Vermont.

I think it is very important to act on our beliefs of solving problems through negotiations and other peaceful means. I do not think that having jets with the ability to carry nuclear weapons, makes me feel safer. In fact, I think to the contrary. Be positive role models for our children, our state, our country, and our world. There are better ways to solve problems.

Thank you for your work.

Letter to the editor: Local veteran was treated very well at parade

Posted on June 10, 2019 |
By Diana Barnard

For the past several years, I have celebrated Memorial Day by driving veteran Robert “Buster” Weller in the Middlebury parade. This outing is only possible with the assistance of many individuals who volunteer materials, time and effort. The staff of Helen Porter prepare decorations and get Buster up and ready extra early on parade day. Champlain Valley Equipment has very generously loaned us an ATV each year to decorate and drive in the parade. Buster and I are treated mid parade to doughnuts and coffee compliments of Middlebury Eye Associates.

Editorial: Did Dems blow it? Think you could do better?

Posted on June 6, 2019 |
By Angelo Lynn

As news of Vermont’s legislative session wraps up, the overall reaction to the session was that the Democrats and Progressives fell short of accomplishing several key measures — namely, implementing retail sales for marijuana, taking the minimum wage to $15 by 2024, passing a favorable family leave bill, finding a way forward on Act 46 (school consolidation and governance), as well as numerous environmental issues.

Legislative Review: Cordes energized for next year

Posted on June 6, 2019 |
By Mari Cordes

Cordes, Mari.jpg

“The two parties which divide the State, the party of Conservatism and that of Innovation are very old, and have disputed the possession of the world ever since it was made ... Now one, now the other gets the day, and still the fight renews itself as if for the first time, under new names and hot personalities ... Innovation is the salient energy; Conservatism the pause on the last movement.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Legislative Review: Hardy reviews eventful session

Posted on June 6, 2019 |
By Ruth Hardy

Hardy, Ruth 2018.jpg

Last week the 2019 Vermont Senate adjourned and my first legislative session officially came to an end. Despite a somewhat rocky finale, I’m happy to report that the legislature accomplished a great deal to help Vermonters, protect our people and environment, and sustain a healthy economy. As a member of the Education and Agriculture committees and an advocate for women and families, I was fortunate to work on legislation that will have a direct impact on the people of the Addison District.

Jessie Raymond: How much gardening can I take?

Posted on June 6, 2019 |
By Jessie Raymond

jessenew ONLINE.jpg

All spring, I looked forward to putting in my vegetable garden. After years of planting way too much — biting off more than I could hoe, you might say — I decided this year to embrace a “less is more” philosophy.

In early April, I started just four tomatoes, along with a few other veggies, from seed, and set them in the kitchen window.

Opinion: The inevitability of an impeachment inquiry

Posted on June 6, 2019 |
By Stephen C. Terry

To impeach President Donald Trump or to not impeach is the latest political guessing game.

Special Counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, appears to have laid out a roadmap for the Democratic House to begin an impeachment investigation.

Despite building momentum among House Democrats to have their Judiciary Committee launch an impeachment inquiry, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi fears it will fail.

Ways of Seeing by Leeya Tudek: Spring beauty belies big problems

Posted on June 6, 2019 |
By Leeya Tudek

Tudek, Leeya.jpg

Spring always comes late to Lincoln, the delay only making its arrival more glorious. All in the first warm day it seems, the apple trees flower, the grass greens and dandelions explode yellow across the meadows. The barn swallows cut through the air chasing after gnats, garter snakes bask in the heat, and wood frogs continue their mellowed peeping from the forest.

The earth awakens with a new energy, spreading vitality like pollen on the wind. Each year of my life, when the trees bud and the air sweetens, I feel a kind of peace.
