Victor Nuovo: Questioning common sense

Posted on April 11, 2019 |
By Victor Nuovo

Nuovo, Victor ONLINE.jpg

Editor’s note: This is the 13th in a series of essays on the history and meaning of the American political tradition.

Thomas Paine (1737–1809) was a political activist, revolutionary, and pamphleteer. English by birth, he became an American citizen and a citizen of the French Republic by choice and played a key role in their respective revolutions. He is best remembered for his revolutionary writings, Common Sense, The Rights of Man, and The Age of Reason.

Letter to the editor: Middlebury needs a Mexican eatery

Posted on April 11, 2019 |
By Dick Beamish

Thank you for focusing your April 4 issue on climate change, the number-one threat to the future of life on our planet. Thank goodness for Bill McKibben, who has probably done more than anyone else to bring global attention to this impending global catastrophe and what we can still do to mitigate it. And thank goodness for newspapers like the Addison Independent for editorials and news coverage devoted to “This biggest issue of our times.”

Editorial: No time to waste on climate inaction

Posted on April 8, 2019 |
By Angelo Lynn

As 120 hearty souls make their way from Middlebury to Montpelier for the five-day Next Steps climate walk, the purpose will come into focus on the steps of the state capital this Tuesday: There’s no more time to waste on political inaction.

“Climate delayers aren’t much better than climate deniers,” Tweeted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, a few weeks ago. “With either one if they get their way, we’re toast.”

Opinion: Why take the college application process seriously?

Posted on April 8, 2019 |
By Andrea L. Torello

Letter to the editor: Consider the benefits of using solar energy

Posted on April 8, 2019 |
By Peter Grant

I hear people say that they can’t afford solar.

Wrong.

It costs more to keep paying the current electric rates at around $0.15/kWh than to get solar electric panels.

However, this past year has been very cloudy.

Letter to the editor: Invest in community programs that help the poor

Posted on April 8, 2019 |
By Donna Bailey

Being poor is hard. Asking for help is hard. Meeting new people and navigating tough systems when you are at a low point is demoralizing. Asking for welfare to feed and house your baby makes you a failure in many people’s eyes. Systems to help people have their own challenges: the people who have, tell people who don’t have, what to do. So many people who live in generational poverty have been failed by these systems — schools, doctors and state systems. Not because they are bad or lazy or dumb, but because the systems are not made for or by them.
