Letter to the Editor: Small schools vital to towns

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Olga Pschorr

We all have a story to tell. Please tell me your story. I’ll keep it in mind, I’ll hold it close, when I’m seated next to you at the next Otter Valley Unified Union School Board meeting. I am a Vermonter and a taxpayer. In case you missed it, you are invited to public forums on Nov. 30 and Dec. 5 at OVUHS as part of a democratic process to voice your thoughts on how schools are to be configured and funded.

Letter to the Editor: Voiding of insurance requirement latest attack on ACA?

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Peter Grant

Republicans want to stop the requirement that all have health insurance. Insuring as many in a market is a concept that has been used for centuries. A bigger coverage area spreads the cost around to make it cheaper for everyone including those who actually suffer a “peril” or have to get an insurance payout. Insurers who covered floods and disasters are facing a disaster as not enough customers have paid in to cover all the disasters.

Letter to the Editor: Embracing change the key to reaching our potential

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Matthew Gorton

Change, what the hell is it? Whelp, change, by definition, it is the ability to adapt to new things. It is inevitable; so why do we try to resist it? Without change, we would still be stuck in the Stone Age, chucking spears at each other. Change allows for growth, and it allows us to further ourselves from the primitive world. It has allowed us to master our minds and our planet. Eventually, it will allow us to master our universe. Those who fear change are stuck in the past, they are afraid to spread their wings and soar.

Letter to the Editor: Maybe Middlebury's approach would work at Mount Abe

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Ian Ross

My family moved to Middlebury in 1994 where I then attended MUJHS (grade 7-8) and MUHS (grade 9-12) in one building for 6 years. As a teenage student new to the area I was oblivious to the plans for improving the school setting for Addison Central students until the work was nearly starting. I went on summer vacation after 8th grade, and returned to a very changed and still changing high school. MUMS was due to be completed for the next school year. Looking back, the project, while expansive, apparently did not cover all potential concerns in the building.

Letter to the Editor: Veterans' group works for peace

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

Armistice:  “A pause in a war, brought about by agreement between the two sides; a truce”  (Webster’s Elementary Dictionary, 1941).

An armistice was signed at the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month, 1918 to mark the end of World War I. In 1926, the United States Congress “passed a resolution for an annual observance” of Armistice Day. Twelve years later, the United States Congress passed the Act of 1938. November 11th was “dedicated to the cause of world peace”.

Politically Thinking, Eric L. Davis: Trump making impact on judiciary

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Eric L. Davis

President Trump and Congress have yet to enact any major bills in 2017, although that could change once the legislative process on taxes runs its course. They also face upcoming deadlines to continue federal spending authority after Dec. 8, to develop policy for several hundred thousand undocumented residents brought to the United States as children, and to reauthorize the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, known in Vermont as Dr. Dynasaur.

Ways of Seeing, Barbara Clearbridge: Transforming conflict with love

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Barbara “Shulamith” Clearbridge

This is a small story about a small thing that made a big difference.

When I was in my late 30’s I attended a three-week workshop about living a spiritually based life. There was a fellow there who I didn’t want anything to do with. I found him abrasive and disruptive to the workshop and didn’t believe he belonged there. I was unable even to respect him or honor his spiritual path.

Community Forum, Brian Shupe: Investing in Vermont's outdoor recreation economy means acting on climate

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Brian Shupe

This week’s community forum is by Brian Shupe, Vermont Natural Resources Council executive director, and Tom Stuessy, Vermont Mountain Bike Association executive director.

As children, many of us spend fun-filled hours learning to first ride a bicycle, then to ride it well. The roots and rocks of Vermont trails provide the perfect training ground for learning to go bigger, jump a little higher, and move a little faster year after year.

Community Forum, Haviland Smith: Iran, Islam and Nukes

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Haviland Smith

This week’s Community Forum is by Haviland Smith, a retired CIA Station Chief who served, inter alia, in Lebanon and Iran.

In 1953, America participated in the overthrow of the only democratically elected government Iran has ever had by removing Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh from office and installing the Shah in his place. Iranians of all political persuasions have never forgotten that fact and the act itself has since played a critical role in souring bilateral relations between our two countries.

Posted on November 27, 2017 |
By Kris Pearsall

As chair of the Mt. Abraham Renovation Committee, I’d like to thank Mr. Lynn for devoting so much of his last few editorials to the renovation discussion. The committee appreciates the effort to bring attention to this important work. Unfortunately, some of the information, especially dates, contained in those editorials have been incorrect.
