A few nights a month, we welcome guests into our home. Recently we hosted a young woman, Marissa, and her grandfather, who were visiting Marissa’s younger brother at Middlebury College.

It was clear from first meeting them that members of this family are well educated world travelers. Marissa is a Harvard graduate, currently living on her own in South America, working for an international company — smart and savvy, used to navigating unfamiliar places.

Letter to the editor: Tree-cutting did Ferrisburgh a favor

Posted on June 7, 2018 |
By Pat Steele

As I continue to read about the ongoing tree issue on Arnold Bay Road in Ferrisburgh I wonder why the tree warden, Mr. Mix, fails to see all the rotted and broken hanging trees on the other side of the road that are a danger to cars and walkers? If this is the town’s “right of way” why hasn’t the town done something about them?

A good storm will and can take these down. This is a very highly traveled road to Basin Harbor, for people from New York as well as walkers.

Letter to the editor: Hardy offering positive message

Posted on June 7, 2018 |
By Monica Collins

Last week I attended the campaign kick-off gathering for Ruth Hardy and was so pleased with her message. It was a wonderful exciting atmosphere at American Flatbread filled with people of all ages. I’ve known Ruth for a few years and was glad to hear that she was running for the seat that Senator Ayer will be stepping back from.

Letter to the editor: Full rail station, not just platform

Posted on June 7, 2018 |
By Rob Carter

I would like to voice my agreement with David Carlson (Letters, May 31) on the importance of providing a covering for the new rail platform, and would go a step further.

In order to foster the use of rail as an alternative means of transportation, and at the same time encourage tourism, I would suggest that we consider a rail station instead of a simple platform.

Dan MacArthur is a member of the Marlboro School Board, which oversees the town’s elementary school. The school has 76 students, or a little over eight students per grade. St. Albans City Elementary, by comparison, has almost 800 students.

Letter to the editor: Rail bridges project could be turning point for town

Posted on June 4, 2018 |
By Anders Holm

Necessity is the mother of invention. Downtown Middlebury has been weak in the knees for some time now and the bridge project stands to serve the coup de grace. The bridge project will be remembered as the dark age and if Middlebury pulls itself together the dark age will be followed by a renaissance.

Letter to the editor: Governor Scott's veto of state budget is mystifying

Posted on June 4, 2018 |
By Spencer Putnam

Gov. Scott’s decision to veto the budget sent to him by our legislature is mystifying on several counts.

This is a budget passed with overwhelming tri-partisan support, unanimously in the Senate and by a margin of 117-14 in the House. Why should the governor stand in opposition to what is so obviously the consensus of Vermont’s elected representatives?

Letter to the editor: Raising the minimum wage won't drive away jobs

Posted on June 4, 2018 |
By Bob Zeliff

It is clear that 30 years of “trickle down” public policies have worked to make high end wages higher and low end wages MUCH lower due to inflation.

The minimum wage today pays for less than it did 30 years ago. Approximately 87,000 Vermonters suffer this wage stagnation.

We have long understood the concept of livable wage. Here in Vermont that is $15.76 in rural areas and $17.64 in urban areas.

Letter to the editor: Ban on coyote kill contests lauded

Posted on June 4, 2018 |
By Leslie Blow

A passionate and persistent coalition of landowners, biologists, farmers, hunters, wildlife enthusiasts, and others overcame opposition from paid lobbyists and Vermont’s own Fish and Wildlife Department to ban coyote killing contests for prizes. Vermont will be? only the second state in the country to do so thanks to the successful passage of H.636.
