Guest Editorial: Trump travel ban strikes at heart of American values

Posted on February 6, 2017 |
By Laurie L. Patton

This has been a distressing week for the greater Middlebury community, as it has been for many Americans. As an institution of higher learning, Middlebury holds dear the value of the free exchange of ideas, the principle of open discourse, and the importance of bringing together people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs to study, teach, and work in a free and open society. It is central to who we are.

Community Forum: Scott plan falls short in many ways

By Jim Condos

op Condos, Jim ONLINE SMALL.jpg

This week’s writer is Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos

The Vermont Constitution (Chapter 1, Article 6) demands that our elected officials are open, transparent and accountable. The authors understood how transparency in government is the very basis of trust. State statute also demands access and accountability:

Letter to the editor: Coyote hunt especially badly timed

Posted on February 6, 2017 |
By Marc Beaudette

While not illegal under our currently inadequate wildlife rules, the coyote-killing competition happening next week in Bristol is inhumane and should be disparaged. Coyotes are one of the few species that form monogamous pairs AND the males assist the mother in pup-rearing, along with other family members.

Letter to the editor: Hunting contest counter-productive

Posted on February 6, 2017 |
By Renate Callahan

It seems there is no end to the outrage and dangers to which our Vermont wildlife is subjected. The latest is a coyote killing contest being organized in Bristol. For the entry fee of $25, coyotes — every gender, every age, even pups — will be killed in unlimited numbers and under terrifying circumstances for no other reason than that these humans feel like shooting them.

Letter to the editor: New alliances needed to stand up to Trump, Bannon

Posted on February 6, 2017 |
By Amy Graham

Dear Sen. Leahy, Sen. Sanders, and Congressman Welch: Thank you for all you are doing to stand up to Trump and Bannon’s dangerous agenda for America. A few days ago I wrote an email urging you to obstruct and resist Trump’s agenda in every way you can. As predicted, the Democrats’ attempt to delay confirmation hearings for Cabinet nominees simply resulted in Senate Republicans changing the rules and confirming nominees without input from the Democrats.

Guest Editorial: Governor's proposed raid of ed fund would raise taxes

Posted on February 2, 2017 |
By Rep. David Sharpe

The Governor’s proposal adds costs to the Education Fund that would result in increased property taxes! Once again we see a Governor’s ideas funded on the backs of Vermont property tax payers, by using the education fund to shore up spending from the general fund.

Jessie Raymond: Benefits of cold weather overrated

Posted on February 2, 2017 |
By Jessie Raymond

The other day my friend Brian sent me a text: “Do you know anything about Wim Hof?”

I wrote, “I’ve heard that it will destroy your hard drive. Do not click on it!”

He texted me back with an emoticon of a yellow face that seemed to be laughing or choking and either looking exasperated or pretending to understand a joke but not actually getting it. (I struggle with emoticons.)

Whatever it meant, I gathered that Wim Hof was not a computer virus.

Peter Burrows: Why public schools matter

Posted on February 2, 2017 |
By Peter Burrows

Living in the backdrop of a federal education policy hurtling towards privatization, it is critical that we take a moment to remember the foundational role our public schools play in our country. We need to reflect on our commitment to public education, and to understand the power that our system has in supporting a dynamic and civilized democracy. We need to be able to articulate why public schools matter, and what they mean to our communities, our democracy, and our students.

Ways of Seeing: Johanna Nichols, Women's March helped in looking to future

Posted on February 2, 2017 |
By Johanna Nichols

“Time is a curious thing,” writes the novelist Fredrik Bachman. “Most of us only live for the time that lies right ahead of us. A few days, weeks, years.” Not so long ago, I came to the insight that I had reached an age when there is more to look back on than ahead. “And when time no longer lies ahead of one,” writes Bachman, “other things have to be lived for…grandchildren, perhaps. One finds a way of living for the sake of someone else’s future.”
