Editorial: Endorsements, but first, let’s make Election Day a holiday

Posted on November 1, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

Election Day should be a national holiday simply to encourage as many American citizens as possible to make it to the polls and vote. Why not? Certainly it’s a more important day than, say, Columbus Day. Ideally, voters would use at least part of the day to make a final review of the candidates. Everyone knows something about the presidential race, but a good many Americans don’t know much about some of the state offices or the differences between the candidates for their state legislatures.

Clippings: Ready for 2nd helping of Halloween

By Trent Campbell

Some of my colleagues here at the Addison Independent often joke that stories from my childhood remind them of something out of the “Our Gang” comedies of the 1930s. Reporter John Flowers refers to me and my old childhood buddy Donnie Andresen as Spanky and Alfalfa (if you are young and don’t recognize those names just YouTube them into your Google machines, or do a tweet or something). Now Spanky isn’t a name I would wish on anyone, but I proudly wear the Spanky badge.

Politically Thinking: State’s D.C. incumbents will roll

Posted on November 1, 2012 |
By Eric Davis

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch are overwhelming favorites to be re-elected next week. These two candidates may get more votes than anyone else listed on the ballot, including President Obama and Gov. Shumlin. Sanders could be the top vote-getter in Vermont, with about 70 percent of the vote, with Welch not far behind in the mid-60 percent range.

Editorial: Pearce for state treasurer

Posted on October 29, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

When casting a vote for State Treasurer on Election Day, Vermonters should first consider what qualities, skills and background are most important in the candidates. The position, after all, has three primary responsibilities: managing the state’s bonds, managing the state’s pension funds, and handling a host of cash management tasks.

Sounds boring to most of us, which is one of the reasons that this race is rarely controversial.

Middlebury received a bushel basket full of good economic news this week in three announcements: Vermont Hard Cider, LLC was bought by a global Irish company that will strengthen the company in its effort to stay atop the national hard cider market and expand its operations and job growth here in Middlebury; the Vermont Transportation Department announced it will finance the Western Corridor rail project without waiting for federal assistance and have it completed by 2017; and the town of Middlebury was given control of managing the railroad tunnel project that will rebuild the overpasses

Men find refuge, solace in their cars

Karl Linholm Clippings dad's car.jpg

Yes, I have retired, but I am allowed to teach one course a year in retirement, so that’s what I do.

I teach my class in the late morning, and then I don’t go back to an office with a desk full of unmet responsibilities and an e-mail inbox of notes impossible to respond to adequately.

Instead, I go home and walk the dogs. Or I go to lunch with a friend.

'Expert' offers tips for Facebook newbies

If you use the Internet, you ought to check out this really cool site.

It’s called Facebook. And quite a few people are using it lately.

In case you haven’t heard of it, Facebook is a “social networking” tool that lets you connect with others without the having to leave your house or talk on the phone, which, let’s face it, can be exhausting. Instead, you share pictures and stream-of-consciousness thoughts with a network of people known as your “friends.”

Guest Editorial: What role for government?

Posted on October 22, 2012 |
By David Sharpe

This week’s writer is David Sharpe, a former Bristol selectman and a member of the Vermont House of Representatives.

As I listened to the Dalai Lama speak Saturday he mentioned a Hawaiian saying: “Your blood is my blood, your bones are my bones, your happiness is my happiness and your suffering is my suffering.”

Editorial: Time to overhaul the debates

Posted on October 18, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

After watching the second presidential debate, we’re becoming staunch advocates of revamping the way these debates play out as the candidates hit the homestretch. We’re not talking about tinkering with the rules — the silliness over which candidate goes first or other such petty nonsense — but rather overhauling the process so that the public actually learns something about each candidate’s position on the issues and then have them engage in a more serious discussion of their policies.

Editorial: Brock's role as challenger

Posted on October 18, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

In his race for governor, Republican Randy Brock has failed to gain traction on an issue that should have been a slam-dunk: challenging Gov. Peter Shumlin on his plans to move the state to a universal health care system.

We have been supporters of Gov. Shumlin’s proposals, and continue to be, but the consequences of the proposed changes are unclear and continued debate could reveal serious flaws. In our political system, that should be the job of the challenger and of the opposition party.
