Legislative review: Vermont economy needs 'Code Green'

Posted on February 7, 2013 |
By Rep. Paul Raulston D-Middlebury

I was happy the Speaker assigned me to another term on the House Committee on Commerce and Economic Development. I believe ours is a committee well constituted to deal with the complex economic issues we are facing in Vermont.

Editorial: Who's helped, who's hurt by proposed 'Death with Dignity' law?

Posted on February 4, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

What seemed striking about the “death with dignity” debate that filled the State Capitol this past week were the juxtaposed tones from each respective side: compassion to ease the suffering of loved ones was the predominant message of those who supported the legislation; a more strident argument against the moral affront the bill poses dominated the testimony of those opposed.

Vermonters rightfully perplexed by complex feelings about this issue might reflect on those countering arguments to draw their own conclusions.

Legislative Report: Transportation needs hard for state to fund

Posted on February 4, 2013 |
By Rep. Diane Lanpher

Rep. Diane Lanpher, Addison-3, is a member of the House Transportation Committee.

Vermont’s transportation system has faced some extraordinary challenges in recent years, with four federally declared disasters in 2011, including spring floods followed by Tropical Storm Irene. This year we face different transportation challenges — both challenge the Transportation Fund. One more immediate and another reaching far into the future.

Long Term challenge:

Editorial: A question to put on the radar

Posted on January 31, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

The reassessment by Vermont Gas Systems to change its proposed route through Monkton back to the Velco right-of-way instead of along public roads through a short stretch, was welcome news to many Monkton residents — though others are still peeved that the pipeline is headed through town without any apparent benefit to that community.

It’s a interesting dilemma from a public policy perspective.

Editorial: Double whammy for Vergennes?

Posted on January 31, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

Vergennes residents are eyeing a double-whammy if a city bond to build a new $1.85 million police station is approved as well as two separate bonds for improvements to the Vergennes Union High School that could total $6.2 million. The school bonds will be voted on this coming Tuesday, while a vote to approve the police station bond would be held on Town Meeting Day.

That the bonds land in the taxpayers’ laps at virtually the same time is bad enough, but there are also elements to both the city’s and school’s projects that are less than critical.

Clippings: Playing the role of elder statesman

Posted on January 31, 2013 |
By John Flowers

Passing the half-century mark has been full of surprises. There was that first letter from the American Association of Retired Persons, then (to my shock) the availability of a some “senior” discounts. Then, on Sunday, came my first “elder statesman” talk with our daughter, Diane.

Around the Bend: Laundry proves to be a monster task

Posted on January 31, 2013 |
By Jessie Raymond

Occasionally, such as when I am cooped up inside for most of the month of January, I get an uncontrollable urge to clean. Usually, if I just take a few deep breaths, the feeling passes in a minute or two. But sometimes I can’t help myself. This past weekend, for instance, I cleaned out the laundry room.

My inspiration? The Sasquatch standing in the corner.

Editorial: To the far left: ‘Say it, we must’

Posted on January 28, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

Vermont Progressives and liberal Democrats should tread cautiously in their reaction to Gov. Peter Shumlin’s budget address this past Thursday lest they open a political divide between themselves and the vast majority of Vermonters. The danger is that would be perceived as too far left of the mainstream, as the Tea Party is perceived to be too far right, and their political clout compromised.

The Outside Story: Northern species of flying squirrels differ from the southern

Posted on January 28, 2013 |
By Madeline Bodin

The calls come in all winter, said Paul DeBow of DeBow Wildlife Service in Plymouth, N.H. If there is no snow, the peak will be in January or February, when it’s the coldest. Some people think the animals they hear partying in the attic are chipmunks, he says. Chipmunks in the attic in the middle of winter. But they are not.

Chipmunks, DeBow explained, hibernate in winter and what homeowners are probably hearing are flying squirrels. Because flying squirrels are nocturnal, few people ever see them.
