PSB: How is Entergy's spin-off better for Vermont consumers?

Senate President Pro Temp Peter Shumlin and House Speaker Shap Smith are right to question the alleged benefits of allowing Entergy to spin off its Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant (and five others) into a separate holding company called Enexus. On the face of it, the spin-off does little more than free Entergy, a debt-free and profitable company, of future expense while creating a new company — loaded with debt — to shoulder the burden of decommissioning five aging nuclear plants in the not-so-distant future.

Finding the benefit to Vermont in such a deal is perplexing.

Between the Lines: Who knows where the time goes?

Posted on November 5, 2009 |
By Gregory Dennis

Time flies like an arrow, Groucho Marx said, and fruit flies like a banana.

But seriously, folks: Where does the time go?

We often find ourselves asking that question, and no more frequently than this time of year — as the busy holiday season approaches and our New Year’s resolutions to have more free time fade like frost on a warming November morn.

Fifty years ago, when the futurists of the mid-20th century looked ahead to this age, they foresaw an America of people with delicious amounts of time on their hands.

Around the Bend: Trick-or-treaters hard to scare up

Posted on November 5, 2009 |
By Jessie Raymond

During the first week of November, you’ll notice a difference between people who live in town and people who live in the country. Those of us out in the boonies invariably have a giant bowl of leftover Halloween candy on our counters, a harsh reminder that we can’t draw a good trick-or-treat crowd.

Clippings: There's no place like the home lawn

Posted on November 5, 2009 |
By Matt Dickerson

A friend was recently in town for a visit. He’d just returned from 20 months with the Peace Corps on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. Before that he’d been a student at Middlebury College. And before that, he’d grown up in Kansas. Now the trees in St. Lucia don’t have a season for shedding leaves. College students are not required to do lawn care. And Kansas doesn’t have many trees — just prairies, yellow brick roads, and ’70s rock bands.

Editorial: Why pundits use storylines that too often miss the story

Posted on November 5, 2009 |
By Angelo Lynn

In four elections Tuesday, voters in Virginia, New Jersey, New York and California showed a strong bias for local and personal politics that had little ties to the national scene, though too many media pundits tried to make it seem like the tide was changing across the nation’s political landscape.

While headlines proclaimed that it “wasn’t 2008 anymore,” and that the Republican “sweep” was a warning to Democrats of things to come in the mid-term elections next year, we would hope most readers understand that the headlines serve the political pundits better than the public.

Editorial: Recipe for economic failure

Posted on October 29, 2009 |
By Angelo Lynn

Nothing will be pleasant when tackling the task of shoring up the state unemployment compensation fund. Sacrifices will have to be made by the business community in the form of increased taxes into the fund, and by workers who have lost their jobs.

As compassionate Vermonters, the notion that unemployed workers may have to do with less is tough to hear, but we all must brace for the pain that comes with shared sacrifice.

Politically Thinking: FairPoint walks fine financial line

Posted on October 29, 2009 |
By Eric L. Davis

FairPoint Communications’ resort to bankruptcy court to restructure its debts raises important policy issues for state and national legislators and utility regulators. FairPoint, Vermont’s dominant provider of landline communications services, bought Verizon’s landline operations in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont in early 2008. FairPoint, which had been a small company serving rural markets in southern states, added more than 1 million new customers in the Verizon deal, along with over $2 billion in debt.

Clippings: The cattle call meets the big city

Posted on October 29, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

I took off for New York earlier this month, cutting out of work a bit early on a Friday afternoon to make the trip. Almost all of my dearest college friends flocked to the city after graduation, so an outing to New York is a bit like one-stop shopping at a big-box store: Somewhere, in a city of 8 million some odd people, are a half-dozen friends waiting for me; I just have to elbow my way through never-ending aisles of strangers, knick-knacks and two-for-the-price-of-one deals to find them.

The bottom line starts at 350

Posted on October 22, 2009 |
By Angelo Lynn

We shouldn’t even have to tell you where you’re having lunch this Saturday, Oct. 24, or what you’re bringing. You should already know. I’m bringing a pot of hot pumpkin soup and maybe my apple crisp, the kind with the crunchy topping flavored with maple syrup. Can’t beat it when it’s hot. Where are we going? To the gigantic Middlebury potluck lunch, and while the food will be delicious, the cause is the driving force.

Community forum: A public option for fire fighting

Posted on October 18, 2009 |
By Pieter Broucke

For all too long, firefighting in America has been the sole monopoly of government, usually organized at the very local level of cities and communities and often relying on volunteers. While firefighting serves the community, this public stranglehold needs to be broken for a variety of reasons.
