Letter to the editor: Draft dodger deserves no respect

Posted on December 31, 2018 |
By Alexander Lyall

Looking back, local Selective Service Boards spread the obligation. The 1960s draft seemed democratic and just. The burden was shared, although class introduced an element of inequity.

Along came an eligible lad with millions of dollars in his personal account. He could, as they did in the Civil War, buy his way out. Adjusted for inflation, father Trump made it happen ... a “medical” excuse, while the rest of us, the “others,” dug foxholes and slogged through the leaches and mud. We occupied body bags or considered the odds of shipment home.

Lessons in listening: Celebrating who we are and what we love in 2019

Posted on December 27, 2018 |
By Laura Wilkinson

Wilkinson, Laura.jpg

The light is slowly returning and the final days of 2018 are upon us. The festivities of December will be replaced by the quiet starkness of January. As much as I enjoy the rituals of the season, I welcome the opportunity to mirror the dormancy of the outer world with introspection. For many, this time also inspires hopefulness with the creation of New Year’s resolutions. As most resolutions tend to be grounded in health and wellness, the nurse practitioner/health coach in me feels obliged to add my two cents on this matter.

Guest editorial: As rural economies go in the nation, so goes Vermont

Posted on December 27, 2018 |
By David Moats

Economic stagnation in Vermont is not new. For decades, it has defied the efforts of political leaders, Republican and Democrat, to solve it.

What’s new is a growing awareness that the problem is a widespread condition, animating protests from Paris to London, from Oklahoma to Arizona, West Virginia to Vermont.

Ways of Seeing by Leeya Tudek: Time in Africa helps redefine beauty

Posted on December 27, 2018 |
By Leeya Tudek

Tudek, Leeya.jpg

How do you measure a woman’s beauty? Is it in how many compliments she receives? How many people are attracted to her? How many likes she gets on Instagram posts?

As a girl, “beautiful” can feel like a state you are expected to reach in order to fulfill your existence, and to matter.

Growing up, I became aware of this message from society incrementally. I noticed it while trying to find clothes that were nice looking and functional, and discovering that only boys get real pockets in their pants.

Eric Davis: Health care to be hot topic in 2020

Posted on December 27, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Davis, Eric May 2018.jpg

Health care is likely to be one of the most important issues in the 2020 presidential and congressional elections.

Earlier this month, a Texas federal district judge ruled that the entire Affordable Care Act (ACA) is unconstitutional. This decision will definitely make health care a more salient issue in 2019 and 2020.

A floating solid waste station? That’s cutting edge.

The Mission Concert Committee of the Vergennes Congregational Church wishes to thank the many talented performers, sponsors and people of Addison County who made the 3rd annual mission concert on Sunday, Dec. 9, such a success. Letter to the editor: Transition to electric needed

Posted on December 27, 2018 |
By Peter Grant

I have had an electric car for a year now and am mostly happy with it, on warm sunny days — a Chevy Volt.

It gets about the equivalent of 100 miles a gallon with $2.50 for a gallon of gas and $0.15 per kWh in electric mode. Or 45 miles on a gallon of gas in gas mode. This doesn’t really offset the lease of $310/month.

Guest editorial: Merry Christmas

Posted on December 24, 2018 |
By Emerson Lynn

We stare at our children and envy their lightness of being, like snowflakes swept along the hard edge of winter’s breath. They are spared the cares that shadow our lives. Their orbits are drawn with the truest and most elegant of lines; you are their center, and they yours.
