Editorial: MUHS Nordic girls: Impressive!

Posted on March 1, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In the midst of news surrounding Town Meeting, the presidential primaries, the Dow cruising over 13,000, North Korea agreeing to cut back on its testing of nuclear weapons, and the continuing threat of war with Iran by the same neoconservatives that pushed us unnecessarily into a war with Iraq, let’s pause for a moment to applaud a local milestone: the MUHS Nordic girls’ ski team won the D-II state championship this week.

It was the first state championship of any MUHS Nordic ski team since 1989.

It’s a special achievement for several reasons:

Clippings: Mishka makes lasting impression

Posted on March 1, 2012 |
By Christian Woodard

When my roommate, Nikhil, announced he was going to Mauritius for three months and asked if I could take care of his dog, I thought immediately of body heat. A 70-pound German shepherd throws off a lot of warmth, and I sleep in a poorly insulated room.

“Can he sleep in the bed?” I asked.

“He’s not really supposed to, but…”

“Done,” I said. “When do you leave?”

Time outdoors builds character

My 22-year-old nephew Michael is both philosophical and artistic in nature. I describe him as contemplative and creative. He has also spent essentially his whole life within a short drive of mountains and trout streams. He has lived with his family in Colorado, Maine, western North Carolina and Alaska. He spent three years in Addison County at Middlebury College and another year studying abroad in mountainous Chile.

Editorial: A tragedy of misplaced priorities

Posted on February 23, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

That the Vermont State Police failed to adequately respond in a search for 19-year-old Levi Duclos, who was reported to state police as an overdue hiker in Ripton on Jan. 9, has been acknowledged by most, outraged first responders and rescue volunteers across the state, distressed friends and local residents, and shaken the public’s confidence in the state police force.

It is clear to almost everyone that this is a tragedy that might have been prevented had a better system been in place.

Editorial: A note to Charlotte residents

Posted on February 23, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

We won’t claim a preference in the current redistricting debate that has proposed moving Charlotte into the Addison County senatorial district, but in case math prevails we’d like to introduce you to aspects of the county that may be closer to your values than you may know.

Our rural roots are the most obvious similarities. Dairy farming, open land, small town government and small rural schools are the heart of both areas.

Clippings: Vt. Town clerks are a special breed

Posted on February 23, 2012 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

I first started to poke around town clerk’s offices and, more importantly, get to know the people who run them in the mid-1980s, when I started selling real estate for about five years. Back then, Panton’s office, if I remember correctly, was in a basement in a home near Vergennes, while Waltham’s was basically housed on a porch and didn’t have a copier.

Around the bend: Mesmerized by Hollywood hype

Posted on February 23, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

I used to look at the covers of celebrity gossip magazines at the supermarket checkout and wonder about the headlines: What is Kim Kardashian’s “painful secret”? Is Jennifer Aniston really pregnant?

But I could never bring myself to buy a copy; other shoppers might think I was the kind of person who cared about the vapid lives of Hollywood stars.

Turns out, that’s exactly the kind of person I am.

Guest Editorial: The bigger picture

Posted on February 20, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

When Central Vermont Public Service was granted an emergency rate increase in 2001, the deal struck was that the utility would repay the difference to ratepayers when, and if, the utility was sold. The amount was an estimated $21 million.

CVPS is I the process of being acquired by Gaz Metro, the Quebec Company that owns Green Mountain Power and Vermont Gas. It took a nanosecond before the question of the $21 million took center stage.
