Victory Nuovo: Civilization's dysfunction

Posted on February 1, 2018 |
By Victor Nuovo

Rousseau’s “On the Social Contract” begins with this famous declaration: “Man is born free, and is everywhere in chains.”

The opening clause of this declaration expresses a fundamental principle of modern liberalism: every human being is, by nature, free. Yet, Rousseau observes, notwithstanding this native freedom every human being has become enslaved, and the cause of this enslavement is civilization.

Gregory Dennis: 'The Post' and the legacy of the free press

Posted on February 1, 2018 |
By Gregory Dennis

“The Post,” Steven Spielberg’s latest melodrama, will lift many a heart. It recounts how the Washington Post defied the Nixon White House and a posse of prosecutors to report on the Pentagon Papers.

Editors and reporters will be among its biggest fans. As Manohla Dargis observed in her Times review, the film is about “a subject that’s dear to the heart of journalists — themselves!”

Editorial: A step forward for Trump, but what he didn't say is key

Posted on February 1, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

In Trump’s State of the Union speech Tuesday, he acted the part of a calm and rational president: optimistic, mostly uplifting, and confident in the nation’s ability to prosper and remain a world leader. By Trump standards, he delivered a positive message to the country, calling it “America’s moment” to shine. Good for him. It was a welcome change from the brash divisiveness of the past 12 months.

Letter to the editor: Thoughtful, phased-in minimum wage increases work

Posted on January 29, 2018 |
By Spence Putnam

In the guest editorial that appeared in the Jan. 15 edition of the Addison Independent Emerson Lynn claims that raising the minimum wage “would only hurt those it would be set up to help.” It’s hard to see why earning more money would hurt the beneficiaries of higher wages.

Letter to the editor: Unproductive 'tandem classrooms' lost in Mt. Abe plan

Posted on January 29, 2018 |
By Denise Dalton

What are tandem classrooms? An online search reveals this term is mostly used to describe an academic process of co-teaching. Tandem classrooms, as the term is used at Mt. Abraham, are a physical stacking of one classroom in front of another. The only way to reach the second classroom is by passing through the first. Tandem classrooms are also those that are separated by a retractable curtain/wall for flexibility in classroom size. Logistically speaking, neither of these solutions are conducive to focused learning.

Letter to the editor: All breeds of dog worthy of love

Posted on January 29, 2018 |
By Jessica Danyow

The recent Front Porch Forum postings about the dogs missing after the house fire in Middlebury have been a cause of sadness to me. First and foremost because we know now that all four dogs perished in the fire or shortly thereafter. My heart goes out to the family that has endured this loss. The loss of a home and the belongings in it is sad, but the loss of the love of your dogs is unspeakable.

Letter to the editor: 'Shooting from the Hip' is an acronym for thorough hiring process

Posted on January 29, 2018 |
By Mathew Chabot

My name is Mathew Chabot, and I am a member of the Vergennes City Council.

During the first week of January I requested of Mayor Mike Daniels that the subject of starting a search for our next City Manager be placed on the agenda for the City Council meeting scheduled for Jan. 9, 2018. The purpose for that request was exactly in line with recent FPF comments that have arisen surrounding Mayor Daniels recent quotes in the Addison Independent.

Editorial: Rutland, Montpelier must clean up its waste water flowing into the lake

Posted on January 29, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

If clean water is a goal all Vermonters share, then Rutland seems slow to take up the challenge of addressing a water-sewage treatment system that is the biggest culprit for dumping wastewater overflows into the Otter Creek, which then runs into Lake Champlain at Porter Bay carrying huge volumes of pollutants.
