Letter to the editor: Rail bridges project need not paralyze downtown

Posted on May 17, 2018 |
By Erik Remsen

For the past year, a lot of concern has been expressed on these pages about the future of downtown Middlebury. The necessary replacement of the two railroad bridges likely began this recent round of angst. At the moment, there is a lot of discussion about the use of a few parking spaces for a bus stop on the town green. Most recently, Gregory Dennis lamented the lost spaces in his “Between the Lines” column of May 10th.

Editorial: Cornwall church's plight is the town's plight as well

Posted on May 17, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

The plight of the First Congregational Church in Cornwall should send warning signals throughout the county’s rural towns. Dwindling rural populations and a declining interest in religious services by younger generations has led to smaller congregations — sometimes so small that the closing of a church becomes a likelihood.

Editorial: Rep. Welch slams farm bill

Posted on May 17, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Republicans in Congress said the tax cuts passed earlier this year would do great things for the economy and help individual Americans. While most Americans were opposed to it, Republicans nonetheless claimed it to be a huge accomplishment, and told us just to wait to see all the good that would come from it.

Opinion: Hoff brought 'bold approach'

Posted on May 14, 2018 |
By Stephen C. Terry

The recent death of former Democratic Gov. Philip H. Hoff serves as an indelible marker of how much Vermont has changed since 1962 when the first term Burlington lawmaker surprised the nation and was elected Governor.

Until Hoff became the first popularly elected Democratic Governor in state history—the first Democrat to hold the office in 109 years after the previous one was elected by the Legislature—Vermont was the gold standard as a rock-ribbed Republican state.

Letter to the editor: Trump is setting our country back

Posted on May 14, 2018 |
By Peter Grant

My French and German friends say that Trump is becoming a has-been and bringing the U.S. down from it past world leadership with him. Since Trump is tearing down good world agreements, he can no longer be trusted, and his ideas don’t make sense.

How long will it take for a good president to re-build the good will and prestige the U.S. used to have in pre-Trump days? How soon can we get rid of this dangerous fool?

Editorial: Gov. Scott's line in the sand

Posted on May 14, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Gov. Phil Scott’s line-in-the-sand mantra not to raise a single tax or a single fee has made politics in Vermont’s capital more strident, divisive and unruly. The irony is that the governor himself is mild-mannered, affable, pragmatic and someone who seems to get along with almost everyone.

But in this session he has become an ideologue who cleaves so closely to this one over-riding concern, that he has become unreasonable and close-minded.

Jessie Raymond: Spring yard cleanup defies manual

Posted on May 9, 2018 |
By Jessie Raymond

I recently came across an online article titled “Top Ten Tasks for Spring Yard and Garden Cleanup.”

That was four or five more tasks than I personally cared to undertake, but I thought maybe I could pick up a few pointers.

“Be careful when you begin cleaning your yard this spring,” it began. “March is notoriously unpredictable.”

March? I snorted. Clearly this wasn’t a Vermont-based website.

Ways of Seeing: Women's rights are human rights

Posted on May 9, 2018 |
By Joanna Colwell

It is almost two years since I agreed, with some trepidation, to join the WomenSafe board of directors. I was nervous about joining a board because I had never served on one before, and I wasn’t sure if I had the right skills to be useful. I pretty much suck at technology beyond answering my email, and my financial literacy might be even worse. To be honest, I was surprised they even asked me! But I have found my time helping to steer this organization, which has worked since 1980 to help countless survivors in our community, to be precious beyond measure.
