Letter to the editor: Shooter backs gun regulations

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Jerome B. Robinson

I applaud Gov. Phil Scott’s pursuit of laws that would prevent mass murder in Vermont.

Here are two proposals that would make it impossible for shooters to attain the combination of rapid-fire and larger-than-normal cartridge capacity that makes it possible to fire a continuous fusillade of bullets.

1. Ban all accessories that permit a rifle to be converted to rapid-fire capability.

Letter to the editor: Wildlife officials ignore majority

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Alana Stevenson

The population of moose has drastically declined in Vermont due to winter ticks, brainworm, lungworm, loss of habitat and hunting. Yet, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and Board still support a 2018 moose hunt. For too long the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and Board (solely made up of hunters and trappers with vested self-interests) have catered to hunters and trappers, at the expense of animals, wildlife, homeowners, and non-hunting Vermonters.

Letter to the editor: Many fail to admit they are backing a leadership lemon

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Alexander Lyall

The Edsel was a harmless ill-conceived car. A few people bought them, insisting their choice made driving great again. Human nature does that. We reach a dumb decision and defend the choice against overwhelming evidence. Otherwise, there’s an admission implied that what we did wasn’t too smart.

Letter to the editor: The Crook

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Charles Sabukewicz

Not the shepherd’s crook ?

staff and symbol

of the creed of caring,

rod and gatherer

of those who stray

or are lost,

a gentle arm to lead

the tired, the poor,

those yearning to be free

to a better land

and to nudge, urge, and

welcome black, white,

all colors of the rainbow

to join together as one

nation indivisible.

Instead, it is the fiery rod

of chaos and division

I want to thank the town of Middlebury, the town manager and the selectboard, for whom I have had the privilege of serving, for the great honor in the dedication of the town report.

Letter to the editor: New tool to help vulnerable is vital

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Emily Joselson

I was so excited to read about the “Homelessness Tool” being used by CVOEO, as described by Jan Demers, their Executive Director. VI-SPDAT — Vulnerability Index-Service Prioritization Decision Assistance Tool — allows local organizations to prioritize those who are in the most danger from being homeless, and place them at the top of the list for needed services.

Editorial: Gun control facts vs fiction

Posted on March 19, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

As the debate over gun control laws in Vermont heat up, let’s separate some facts from fiction.

• First, much of the debate about the Second Amendment is because of its relatively vague wording. The Second Amendment reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Letter to the editor: 'Focused, inclusive' planning needed for Mt. Abe bond

Posted on March 19, 2018 |
By David Brynn

As we begin the process of preparing for Bond 4, it will be good to take in all of the learnings from the most recent Town Meeting Day vote.

A group of us joined the Bond 3 process in mid-November 2017 with the goal of getting to a “Resounding Yes!” By “Resounding Yes!” we meant a 60 percent voter turnout with 60 percent of them voting “Yes.”

Jessie Raymond: Embracing the sameness of winter

Posted on March 15, 2018 |
By Jessie Raymond

jessenew ONLINE.jpg

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a long, cold, snowy winter. Everyone knows that about me. And now here we are, in mid-March, with fresh snow on the ground.

Isn’t it great?

I worried that the winter storm we had last week was going to be the last snowfall of the season.

“Boy, I’m going to miss this,” I said, putting on my heavy coat, insulated boots, hat and mittens and tromping out through the snow to feed the chickens, same as I have done twice a day for the past 962 days or so.
