Posted on August 17, 2017 |
By Nancy Malcolm and Linda Horn

A year and a half ago community members came gathered at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church on the Green to brainstorm how to protect our downtown and thrive and survive the disruption of the bridge and rail project.  “Neighbors, Together” was conceived and hundreds of ideas were put forth.

Letters to the Editor: Statues glorify historical events

Posted on August 17, 2017 |
By Ellen Whelan-Wuest

In recent months I’ve heard many people, including fellow Vermonters, argue that removing statues of Confederate heroes is a misguided effort to erase history. And yet, it seems to me that very few white Americans have truly looked inward to understand more about our national history and how we, as individuals, continue to benefit from and contribute to a racist society.

Between the Lines, Gregory Dennis: When a big birthday arrives

Posted on August 17, 2017 |
By Gregory Dennis

Medicare turns out to be more complicated than they make it sound. Anybody turning 65 is grateful for it. But it’s not socialized medicine. It’s subsidized healthcare — and more expensive than many of us thought.

Victor Nuovo: Does the Mind always think?

Posted on August 17, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

This is not an essay about politics, but about the mind. But if, as Spinoza and Locke have claimed, the love of truth and a resolute pursuit of it is essential to a healthy and durable civil society, then it is important that we become more familiar with our minds.

That unsolicited advice comes on the heels of a week in which Trump stepped deep into it three times:

• First, he praised Russian President Vladimir Putin for dismissing 755 of America’s diplomatic staff in Russia with a flippant (and ignorant) comment about thanking him for reducing U.S. payroll and diplomatic expenses.
