Editorial: TrumpCare's big sin

Posted on March 20, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

By now, the biggest sin of the GOP health care bill is well known: it’s a tax cut bill masquerading as a health care plan. Simply put, it takes health care away from lower-income and middle-income Americans who need it most, and it cuts taxes on the rich and super-rich by $600 billion.

Editorial: Leadership is the difference

Posted on March 20, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

When I think of the cliché “what a difference a year makes,” my mind races in numerous directions. First to the national elections with Sen. Bernie Sanders on his surprising run against Sec. Hillary Clinton, and to Trump’s embarassing and shocking success against more experienced and better educated rivals, but also, more locally, of the turmoil Porter Hospital faced a year ago and how it has progressed.

Letter to the Editor: Student behavior shows college is failing to educate

Posted on March 20, 2017 |
By Steven Nothern

Following the violence on March 2, Middlebury College officials and college President Patton would shift blame to “outside agitators,” and encourage us to believe this was a one off. There is, however, every indication of a more systemic problem at the college. I am a graduate of Middlebury College, class of 1978. My wife taught in the language department. We are both very dismayed by what we can only describe as the intellectual intolerance of the academy.

Letter to the Editor: Asermily thankful for support

Posted on March 20, 2017 |
By Laura Asermily

Thank you for electing me for a second term on Middlebury selectboard. I value working for a strong Middlebury and deeply appreciate your effort to participate in Town Meeting and voting. Brian Carpenter and I were uncontested though would have welcomed other candidates. I am glad for the interest in filling our Selectboard vacancy to complete Donna Donahue’s term for one year. I hope these candidates and others will consider running in coming years.

Community Forum: Successful bridge work is vital

Posted on March 16, 2017 |
By Brian Carpenter

This week’s writer is Brian Carpenter, Chair of the Middlebury selectboard.

Early last year a group of Middlebury citizens and community leaders, concerned about the impact of the rail/bridge project on our downtown, formed a community action group.

Calling themselves Neighbors Together, this group asked, “How can we work together to preserve those values that define Middlebury during this challenging infrastructure initiative?”
