Panther women rally to nip Bates in lacrosse, improve to 9-1

LEWISTON, Maine – The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team rallied past host Bates on Saturday, 7-6, by outscoring the Bobcats in the second half, 5-1.

The Panthers, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division III, improved to 9-1, 6-1 in NESCAC play. They will host Cortland on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and defending league and national champion Trinity on Saturday at 2 p.m. Bates, ranked No. 14, dropped to 7-5, 3-4 in league play.

Reliving the dream: With film, champs reunite and reflect

MIDDLEBURY — On March 11, 1983, fans of the Middlebury Union High School boys’ basketball team packed the University of Vermont’s Patrick Gymnasium to watch a game that created a lifetime of memories for the team, sparked excitement in the community, shocked the Vermont sports world — and changed the course of a couple lives.

On that night, the Tigers completed a 24-0 season by defeating heavily favored, two-time defending state champion St. Johnsbury, 73-57, in the Division I final.

Panther softball stands at .500

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College softball team tallied a 6-6 record during its spring trip to Clermont, Fla. The squad won five of its first seven games, but dropped four of the final five including a pair of one-run losses.

The Panthers are scheduled to play a three-game set at NESCAC West foe Amherst on Friday and Saturday, their first three league tilts of the spring. Their Wednesday home games vs. Johnson State were postponed indefinitely.

Men's tennis trip finishes at 8-2

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s tennis team returned from its spring break trip with six wins in eight matches, with both losses to teams ranked in the top 10 among NCAA Division III or NAIA teams.

The Panthers, last week ranked No. 10, are 8-2.

Their losses last week came to No. 7 Emory, 5-4, and Georgia Gwinnett, ranked No. 3 by the NAIA. On the trip they defeated No. 9 Kenyon, 7-2.

Panther women's tennis improves to 7-2

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s tennis team improved to 6-2 in dual matches this spring with a 3-2 record during its spring break trip to California. The Panthers are ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division III.

The Panthers’ setbacks came via an 8-1 tally against 12th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer and fifth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by a 5-4 margin.

The Panthers defeated three teams by 8-1 scores, U.C. Santa Cruz, Westmont, and Chicago, which had moved up to No. 12.

Panther women's lacrosse drops first contest

AMHERST — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team split a pair of games against top-10 teams late last week, in the process taking their first loss. The Panthers are 7-1, 4-1 NESCAC, and began last week ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III.

On Saturday, then No. 8 Amherst’s Elizabeth Ludlow netted the game-winner with 3:35 remaining in regulation to give her team an 11-10 victory over Middlebury.

Middlebury track athletes prevail in several events

SAN DIEGO — The Middlebury College track and field team recorded a quartet of individual event victories on Saturday as the Panthers concluded their annual spring trip at the Point Loma Nazarene University Invitational in California.

In men’s competition, the Panthers notched three victories. Kevin Wood won the 5,000-meter run by nearly 27 seconds in 14:54.16. Jake Wood won the 400 hurdles (55.21), while Brandon Cushman finished third (57.43) and Kevin Chu was fourth (58.05).

Special Olympians ski to winter medals

WOODSTOCK — Special Olympics Addison County Nordic, alpine and snowshoe teams recently wrapped up another great season at the Winter Games in Woodstock. The event was hosted by Suicide Six on March 8 and 9.

Members of the Nordic team included Hugh Kennedy, Mary LaFountain, Amy Vachon, David Bishop and Abby LaFramboise. The skiers competed in three events apiece, which ranged from 100 meters to 1 kilometer, as well as the 3X1K relay.
