No. 3 Tigers blast Burr & Burton in quarterfinals

MIDDLEBURY — The No. 3 Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team struck early and played well for three periods in Friday’s Division II quarterfinal to take a solid, 6-2 win over visiting No. 6 Burr & Burton.

The Tigers improved to 13-4-3 and will host a Wednesday night semifinal vs. No. 7 Northfield (8-8-6), which upset No. 2 Peoples, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday. Northfield also upset the Tigers in OT in the final game of the regular season. Burr & Burton finished at 9-11-1, including three losses to MUHS.

VUHS girls run past host OV in first round

BRANDON — Visiting No. 10 Vergennes played what may have been its most complete game of the year on Tuesday, and the result was a 55-45 loss for the No. 7 Otter Valley Union High School girls’ basketball team in a first-round Division II playoff game.

The Commodores — who will visit No. 2 Lyndon on Thursday night — got 26 points from senior guard Ali Provost and earned a 42-29 edge on the boards, mostly thanks to junior center Hannah Curler and senior forward Dani Stapleford.

Panthers miss NCAA hockey bid, end season

MIDDLEBURY – The Middlebury College men’s hockey season came to its earliest end since 1994 on Saturday, when sixth-seeded Colby upset the No. 3 Panthers, 2-1, in a NESCAC quarterfinal.

The loss meant for the first time in the 11-year history of the NESCAC tournament the 11-8-6 Panthers will not reach the final. And for only the second time since 1995, when NESCAC teams first became eligible for the NCAA Division III tournament, the Panthers will not be going.

Eagles tune up for tourney with win

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team used a big fourth quarter to defeat visiting Milton on Tuesday, 43-34.

The Eagles improved to 12-7 heading into Thursday’s regular season finale, a home game vs. Middlebury. Mount Abe has already clinched no worse than a No. 3 seed for the Division II playoffs, but could move up to No. 2 with a win over the Tigers, coupled with a loss by Lyndon (13-6) in the Vikings’ finale.

Tigers pull away from Commodores

VERGENNES — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team rallied past host Vergennes on Friday, 44-31, to keep the Tigers’ hopes for a Division II home playoff game — or possibly even two — alive.

At 7-10, the Tigers are now in fifth, just behind U-32 (8-9) and just ahead of Fair Haven (7-11). They have left two road games — at winless Missisquoi on Tuesday and at Mount Abraham (11-7) on Thursday — and a tough home game vs. D-I Rice on Saturday.

Boys' hockey rules early, ties D-I Rice

MIDDLEBURY — The Division II Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team outplayed visiting D-I Rice for most — but not all — of Tuesday’s home game, and settled for a 2-2 tie.

With a record of 10-2-3 and four regular-season games left, the Tigers remain in the hunt for the top seed in the D-II playoffs, trailing only 14-3 Stowe.

Eagle girls edge tough VUHS team

VERGENNES — The Mount Abraham Union High School on Thursday rallied from a 10-point third-quarter deficit to win at rival Vergennes, 47-41.

The scoring of freshman guard Ashlie Fay (10 of her team-high 16 points in the final period) and the passing and defense of senior guard Jenn Loyer (nine points, seven assists, eight steals) sparked the Eagles’ 20-5 fourth-quarter margin.

Tiger field hockey coach picked to head lax team

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School has picked its successful field hockey coach to replace its girls’ lacrosse program head, who resigned last week after four seasons that included one Division I title.

Cornwall’s Kelley Higgins said she agreed to take over the lacrosse team on relatively short notice because several team parents and many athletes — at least seven of her varsity field hockey players also took the field for the lacrosse team in 2010 — as well as MUHS officials encouraged her to step forward.

Middlebury boys continue streak, hold Lyndon scoreless

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team on Friday had little trouble winning its fifth straight game, 6-0 against visiting Lyndon.

The 9-2-1 Tigers pelted Lyndon goalie Derrick Colburn with 50 shots, while at the other end Tiger netminder Max Longchamp made seven stops against the 1-12 Vikings.

Eagle girls surge by Tigers

VERGENNES — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team picked up a much-needed win on Tuesday, 42-18, at the expense of visiting Vergennes.

The Tigers used smothering defense — VUHS did not score in the first quarter — and what Coach Cindy Atkins called a more poised and patient approach on offense to snap a six-game losing streak and improve to 3-6.

“I saw a lot of growth tonight. I’m really happy. I saw some nice things offensively, and we showed more of a spark defensively,” Atkins said.
