Local Little Leaguers ready for state final

ST. JOHNSBURY — The Middlebury 10- and 11-year-old Little League all-star baseball team won twice this past weekend in St. Johnsbury — once in dramatic, extra-inning fashion — to advance to the championship game of the Vermont tournament.

District I champion Middlebury will play next on Friday at 6 p.m., again in St. Johnsbury, against the winner of the Wednesday evening losers’ bracket final between St. Johnsbury and Brattleboro.

Middlebury team wins District I

BURLINGTON — The Middlebury Little League baseball 10- and 11-year-old all-stars on Tuesday defeated South Burlington, 10-8, to claim the District I title.

The Middlebury team — consisting of players from Middlebury, Weybridge, Cornwall, Shoreham, Leicester and Bridport — earned a berth in this weekend’s state championship tournament in St. Johnsbury.

Vergennes softball stars make title bid

SWANTON — The Vergennes 11- and 12-year-old all-star softball team lost twice late last week at the double-elimination state championship tournament in Swanton and was ousted from the competition.

The team, consisting of players from the Vergennes and Ferrisburgh areas, had earlier won the District I tournament in Burlington. But the team lost on Thursday, 13-6, to Fairfax, and to Connecticut Valley on Saturday, 12-7.

Legion falls in Vermont tournament

CASTLETON — Despite another fine regular season, the Addison County American Legion baseball team came up short in the Vermont tournament for the second straight summer this past weekend, when two upsets at Castleton State College sent AC home early.

On Friday, Southern Division No. 3 seed Brattleboro edged AC, the Northern No. 2 seed, 3-1. On Saturday, North No. 4 Colchester eliminated AC from the double elimination tournament, 12-2.

Local umpire makes the right calls

ORWELL — In 1990, Orwell resident John Tester signed up his 6-year-old son for tee-ball in his then hometown of Union City, Calif., just outside of Oakland. Tester learned the team needed a coach, and he took the job.

The only catch was that Union City Little League baseball required its coaches to umpire.

That April Tester for the first time took the field ready to call them as he saw them.

VERGENNES — A couple hundred adults, teens and younger children relaxed on a balmy summer evening at the Vergennes city pool Tuesday, when also the Vergennes Champs swim team hosted the Middlebury Panthers.

Vt. cancer survivors keep paddling

ADDISON COUNTY — Many of the women on Vermont Dragonheart, a dragon boat racing team for breast cancer survivors, hadn’t heard of dragon boat racing before their cancer diagnoses, but now they’re devotees of the sport.

They’ve done video training in Montreal to work on their form and they recently returned from an international competition in Ontario where they placed 15th out of 84 teams. Six Addison County women are stalwarts on the team.

Weinberg goes the distance, then some

MIDDLEBURY — In the weeks before Andy Weinberg does a 22-mile swim next month in the chilly waters of Lake Tahoe, he’ll bike a 150-mile route through the Vermont mountains, taking him over six gaps, and compete in a 10-mile open-water swimming race in the Northeast Kingdom.
