MIDDLEBURY — Despite the Middlebury College women’s soccer team’s upset loss to Hamilton in the NESCAC quarterfinal round, the 11-3-2 Panthers are going to the NCAA Division III tournament for the 10th time.

The 18th-ranked Panthers, whose credentials were boosted by a 1-0 win on Oct. 24 over then undefeated No. 4 Williams, will play at an NCAA regional at No. 13 MIT this weekend.

The Panthers have won four NCAA regionals, most recently last year, and the program advanced to the 2013 final four.

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team’s run to the NESCAC tournament final, even with a 1-0 loss to top-seeded Tufts in the title game, was enough to earn the 12-6 Panthers a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

Coach David Saward, who after this season will be retiring after 33 years and, so far, 359 wins, will be leading a team into the NCAA tournament for the 11th time and first time since 2010. Saward’s 2007 team earned the NCAA title.

An All-American in lacrosse in his senior year at Middlebury College in 1966, Fred Beams was selected to play that year in the North-South Senior Lacrosse All-Star game in Baltimore.

He won the opening faceoff, dashed down the field, unleashed his wicked underhand shot, and scored ... three seconds into the game!

Last Saturday, Fred was inducted into the Middlebury College Hall of Fame with six other Middlebury stalwarts. This ceremony was only the fourth such celebration, as the Panther Hall of Fame was founded in 2014.
