THETFORD — Five runners from Middlebury, Vergennes and Mount Abraham union high schools raced to top 10 finishes in Saturday’s Division II cross-country championship races at Thetford Academy, but the Tiger boys were edged out in their quest to repeat as D-II champions.

Harwood, last year’s runner-up, placed first in the D-II boys race with 59 points, nipping both the Tigers, who were third with 67 points, and Woodstock, who took second with 61 points.

Fishing the promise of two seasons

I stood thigh deep in a favorite large pool on the New Haven River working the deep channel at the tail. Wes Butler stood on the far bank working the inlet and a swifter channel where the current undercut a steep bank.

Between us we covered the pool thoroughly with a mix of nymphs and black and white wooly buggers, drifting and bouncing along the bottom as well as stripping through the current. But nothing stirred. No flashes of silver, brown, or rainbow red to suggest anything hungry and tempted by our offer.

Late score lifts Tiger football

MIDDLEBURY — The team that keeps finding a way to win did it again on Friday night.

With a minute-and-a-half left in the Division I football quarterfinal at Doc Collins Field, a No. 6 Colchester team that moments before mounted a game-tying 80-yard drive had to punt from its own 23.

On the sidelines, assistant coach Jed Malcolm told the Tiger punt team, including senior defensive end Dylan Lanpher, to be ready.

Lanpher said Malcolm had a hunch.

Mount Abe too much for Otters in first round

BRISTOL — The No. 4 Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team fired on all cylinders — except maybe one — on Tuesday and dispatched visiting No. 13 Otter Valley, 4-1.

The 7-4-4 Eagles possessed the ball constantly, passed efficiently and creatively, won most 50-50 balls, parried the 4-11 Otters effectively when they mounted an attack, and earned a 52-3 advantage in shots at goal.

The All-Blacks, Bluto, Wormer national champs

The All-Blacks from host New Zealand triumphed before their adoring public last week in the Rugby World Cup, defeating France in the final. Perhaps you watched the match on national TV.

Rugby is a sport of great international scope, the national game in Wales, South Africa, and New Zealand and popular in many other countries of the world. Rugby’s following in the U.S. is growing.

I had a chance to travel to rugby-crazed New Zealand some years ago. I came home with a suitcase full of cool All-Blacks gear as gifts for kids and friends.

Eagles nip Middlebury in OT

Posted on October 24, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

soccer3078.jpg

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team put the wraps on the Eagles’ best season in years on Friday, but it wasn’t easy.

The Eagles needed overtime to defeat stubborn visiting Middlebury, 1-0, on a long-range bomb by junior Evy Jacobs; finish their regular season at 9-3-2; and, critically, nail down the No. 4 seed for the Division II playoffs — a loss would have dropped them to No. 5.

CVU nips Tiger field hockey

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School’s 1-0 upset loss to Champlain Valley on Monday will not cost the Tigers a top-four seed in the Division I playoffs, but it might well mean a road trip for a semifinal game depending on the rest of this week’s results.

The teams that will be the Nos. 5 through 7 seeds in some order — Colchester, Mount Anthony and Hartford — cannot amass enough points in the last week of games to crack the top four in the D-I standings.

Twenty-five states, one bull trout

Posted on October 20, 2011 |
By Matt Dickerson

Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus), like their cousins the eastern brook trout (S. fontinalisˆ), are not actually true trout. They are char, in the same family as arctic char, lake trout, and Dolly Varden trout.  In fact, bull trout are close enough to Dolly Varden’s (S.malma) that they were not designated as a separate species until 1980.

Tigers snag playoff berth in home victory

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School football team shrugged off wind, rain, mud and a tough visiting Colchester squad on Friday to claim a pivotal Division I game, 25-8.

The Lakers dropped to 4-3, while the Tigers are 6-1, 5-1 in D-I. A win at Champlain Valley (5-2) on Saturday should clinch the Tigers a top-four playoff berth and a first-round home game. Quality points rankings (QPRs) will then determine seeds.

OV field hockey rallies past Patriots

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team weathered an early storm on Tuesday and emerged with a 2-1 overtime victory over Mount Anthony, one of the state’s better Division I outfits.

The Otters, a team coming off heavy graduation losses after appearing in last fall’s D-II final, improved to 6-4-1. Two of their losses have come to the top teams in D-II, and the other two to D-I Rutland. MAU fell to 7-4-1 with its first loss in four games — the Patriots’ last loss also came to OV.
