MIDDLEBURY — Visiting BFA-St. Albans earned a 21-3 victory over the Middlebury Union High School football team on Friday by having two backs rush for more than 100 yards, tackling well and recovering three of the six Tiger fumbles.

The Bobwhites improved to 5-1 in Division I and overall, good for a second-place tie with Essex behind undefeated Hartford, while the Tigers dropped to 3-3 overall, 2-3 in D-I. That league mark leaves them in an eighth-place tie with Burlington with two D-I games to go: at Colchester on Friday and vs. Champlain Valley on Oct. 19 at home.

BRISTOL — The Vergennes Union High School soccer team rode a fast start and strong defense to a 2-1 win at Mount Abraham on Thursday that gave the Commodores a season sweep of the Eagles, whose only losses have come to their county rivals.

The Commodores — 3-4-1 after their second straight win — set the tone early with determined play and then scored two goals in the half’s final 13 minutes just when the 5-2-1 Eagles seemed to be on the verge of taking control.

BRISTOL — On Friday in Bristol visiting Essex shrugged off an early goal by the Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team and rallied for a 2-1 victory.

But the Metro Conference setback to one of the state’s top teams did not take the luster off what has been the best season for the Eagles in five years: They are 5-2-1 and were coming off a 1-0 win on Tuesday over previously undefeated South Burlington.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team posted one of the program’s biggest wins in recent years on Tuesday, knocking off previously undefeated South Burlington, 1-0, in Bristol.

The result left the two teams tied for first place in the Metro Conference at 5-1-1 at the regular season’s midpoint. The win also extended the Eagles’ unbeaten streak to six games and moved them closer to clinching the program’s first winning season since 2007, when their five-year Division II championship streak was snapped.
