Douglas R. Marsden

HAWTHORNE, Fla. — Douglas R. Marsden, age 61, of Hawthorne, and formerly of Middlebury and Bennington, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at the home of Darlene and Gregory Lockwood of Shaftsbury.

Mr. Marsden had traveled to Vermont in early November to spend time at his hunting camp in Peru and with his family and close friends in this area.

Doug was born on Sept. 22, 1946, in Bennington, and was the son of Roy and Katherine Marsden. He received his education at Bennington High School and upon graduation attended Keene State College. Mr. Marsden was employed at Fairdale Farms before accepting a management position with Kraft Foods in 1977. While working with Kraft, Doug served in various capacities in Canton, N.Y., and Claire, Mich. In 1983 Doug was named plant manager at the Kraft cheese processing facility in Middlebury and returned to his home state of Vermont.

In 1991, Mr. Marsden began employment with the Vermont State Department of Agriculture as a dairy product specialist. Doug retired from this position in 2005 due to declining health. Mr. Marsden and his wife also owned and operated Marsden Country Store in Middlebury for many years. Mr. Marsden was also active in the Middlebury community and was chairman of the annual United Way Fund Drive for several years.

Doug enlisted in the Vermont National Guard in 1966 and served in the Guard for over 39 years. He was a long-standing member of the Guard rifle team and competed in state, national and international matches. Many of his fondest memories were of long days spent on the firing line at Ethan Allen Range in Jericho. Doug retired from the guard in September 2006 as a SFC-E7.

Many life-long friendships were formed during Doug’s military service and he remained close to numerous members of the unit until his death.

Mr. Marsden was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being in the forest and close to nature. Doug was a member and owner in the Winhall Outing Club and never missed a deer season at camp in over 50 years.

In addition to his wife, Arlene, he is survived by his son, Robert and wife Julia of Castleton; his son Bradley and his partner Tina Hutchins of Middlebury; his mother, Katherine Marsden and his brother, James, both of Bennington; and his sister Mary Veitch and her husband Tom of Sunderland.
