Donna Marie (Lee) Tanner

EDEN — Donna Marie (Lee) Tanner, 56, of Eden, died Jan. 21, 2009, at Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burlington after a long battle with diabetes.

She was born Aug. 10, 1952, in Middlebury, the foster daughter of Norman and Mary Rose Audet of Bridport.

She graduated from Middlebury Union High School in 1971 and Vermont College of Cosmetology in May of 1981.

She married Sanford Tanner on Aug. 22, 1981. She operated Donna T’s Hilltop Salon in Eden for many years and was always very involved in local church and community activities. She was also an active member with her husband in the Lamoille County Cruisers antique car and truck club.

She is survived by her husband, Sanford Tanner of Eden; four children, William Cross of Eden, Tina Hubble of Johnson, Darcie Fowler of Hartsville, S.C., and David Tanner of Cabot; a sister, Penny Frye of Crossville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Sandra Camley of Morrisville; seven grandchildren; and foster siblings Elaine, Emmy, Eugene, Earl and Ernie.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the White-Fiess Funeral Home in Morrisville.

Kathleen A. Melendy

HUNTINGTON — Kathleen A. Melendy, 42, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at her home in Huntington.

She was born July 29, 1966, in Proctor, the daughter of the late David Foley Sr. and Kathleen Dezero Foley.

She was a former member of Huntington Fire Department. She enjoyed cooking, helping others, being a mother and raising her children, camping. Family says she was a bighearted person who enjoyed her life.

Kathleen is survived by her husband Matt; three children, Patrick, Ashlei and Matthew; her mother Kathleen Dezero of Pittsford; two sisters, Corinne Squier of Chickopee, Mass., and Colleen Gilman of Wallingford; two brothers, David Foley Jr. and Robert Foley of Pittsford; Marylin and Irving Melendy of South Starksboro; several nieces, nephews, in-laws and other close family.

A memorial service was held Jan. 28 at Huntington Baptist Church. Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Pittsford in the spring.


Jane F. Maloney

VERGENNES — Jane F. Maloney, 60, died Jan. 23, 2009, in Vergennes.

She was born Jan. 25, 1948, in Burlington, the daughter of John and Marjorie Beach Maloney.

She graduated from Vergennes Union High School in 1966 and the College of William & Mary in 1970. In 1972, she earned a master’s degree in library science from the State University of New York at Albany.

In 1985, she married Tom Gamble.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Maloney; a brother-in-law, John Ferriss; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Tom.

In 1972, she began a job as a librarian at the University of Seattle. Three years later she came home to Vergennes to help manage the Basin Harbor Club, where she remained until she was forced to retire due to multiple sclerosis.

Family and friends say she was brilliant, funny and charming and maintained her sense of humor despite the ravages of her disease. She asked that it be said that she died of that “horrible, nasty disease,” multiple sclerosis. Her courage and resourcefulness were an inspiration.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. at the Vergennes Congregational Church. Calling hours will be held at the Maloney home (4634 Basin Harbor Road) Friday, Jan. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Bixby Library, the Vergennes Congregational Church or the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad.


H. Joyce Bursey

MONKTON — H. Joyce Bursey, 97, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at her home in Monkton.

She was born April 25, 1911, in English Harbour, Newfoundland, Canada, the daughter of Gilbert and Elizabeth Ann (Batson) Bugden.

She married the Rev. Jonathan Bursey, who predeceased her March 18, 1999.

She taught at several schools in Newfoundland and in Vermont in Brownsville and Monkton. She was an organist at her husband’s parishes in Brownsville, Bradford and Bristol. She formed and conducted the boys’ choir and senior choir in the Bristol Federated Church.

She is survived by three children: Basil W. Bursey and David Bursey of Monkton, and Barry Bursey and wife Dora of Tucson, Ariz.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.
