ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police have been investigating a number of home burglaries in which someone entered homes and, in many cases, walked off with jewelry.

Early last week police received reports of burglaries at three homes in Shoreham and one in Cornwall. Then last Wednesday, May 2, the owner of a Shacksboro Road home in Shoreham told troopers that someone had entered the unoccupied residence briefly and stolen only jewelry.

Then, on Friday, May 4, troopers responded to a complaint on 84 Galvin Road in Whiting and found someone had broken into the barn through the side door and taken a container of fuel and several power tools.

Police also report that gold jewelry valued at approximately $1,000 was stolen from a home on Mountain Road in Addison while the homeowner was away on Sunday, May 6.

VSP Sgt. James Hogan said troopers in the New Haven barracks are working with those in the Castleton outpost to see if there is a connection to a spate of burglaries in the Benson area around the same time.

Hogan noted that some of the homes were unlocked and he urged people to take typical precautions to protect themselves.

“If you have neighbors, ask them to keep an eye on your place if you are going to be away, and have them contact the authorities if they see something suspicious,” he said.

Hogan  said the missing jewelry was indicative of the fact that thieves steal things that they hope to sell quickly for cash, though businesses that buy such goods nowadays are doing a good job documenting the sellers.

Anyone with information regarding any of these burglaries is asked to call the VSP New Haven barracks at 802-388-4919.

In other recent activity, local VSP:

•  On April 29 at approximately 10 p.m. responded to a motor vehicle accident on Quaker Village Road in Weybridge. Upon arrival, troopers spoke with the 19-year-old driver, who said he swerved to avoid an animal running across the roadway in front of his car. The car ultimately struck a tree.

•  On May 5 at 1:30 p.m. cited Joshua M. Clark of Bristol for driving while his license was criminally suspended.

•  On May 5  at 6:10 p.m. stopped a car on Route 7 in Leicester. During the stop, the trooper reports that he found passenger Dylan Peterson, 21, of Middlebury was in possession of drugs and he cited Peterson into court for possession of marijuana and hashish.

•  On May 7 at 8 a.m. responded to a car-bus accident in Cornwall. Police said Benjamin Deppman, 43, of Cornwall was driving a 2005 Honda Accord on Route 30 behind a 2008 International school bus driven by Elizabeth VanDusen, 50, of Shoreham when the bus stopped to pick up a student; Deppman stopped his car behind the bus. VSP Sgt. James Hogan reported that as the bus began to go forward another student came out of the house where the bus had stopped, and the bus stopped to pick him up. Hogan said Deppman’s car began to go forward at the same time the bus did and Deppman looked down to pick up an item and did not notice that the bus had stopped again. He told police that when he noticed the bus stopped he applied his brakes but did not have enough distance to stop and collided into the back of the bus. There were no injuries reported.

•  On May 7 at approximately 3 p.m. responded to an accident at the intersection of Route 30 and Hortonia Road in Hubbardton in which a 2004 Chrysler Sebring driven by Rose Harvey, 75, of Orwell allegedly struck a bicycle ridden by Matthew Currie, 64, of Benson. Currie was taken to Rutland Regional Medical Center to be treated for head and shoulder injuries. Harvey was uninjured but the front passenger window of her car was shattered. Castleton and Fair Haven police assisted with the investigation. VSP said the crash was still under investigation.

Vermont State Police on May 4 issued a warning to all citizens of continued mail fraud type scams that are occurring frequently. Senior Trooper Andrew Leise advised that if anyone is notified via U.S. Mail of a large monetary winning (for example $550,000) and is sent a check to deposit before they are sent any money this is most likely a scam. Use caution and discretion with this type of mail notification, Leise warned, and he urged people to contact local authorities should they suspect a possible mail scam, or call VSP’s New Haven barracks at 388-4919.
