MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on June 16 were called to the Lodge at Otter Creek retirement community and told by administrators that one of the residents, Robert Evans Sr., may have been abducted by his son. Lodge officials told police that Evans’ son picked him up for coffee at 10:30 a.m. but never returned.

The officials said the son wanted his father to move to Colorado with him but Evans did not want to and went to court last week and a ruling was made that he was competent to make his own decision about his place of residence, according to the police report.

At about 5:30 p.m., Evans’ daughter-in-law called the Lodge from Colorado and said he was safe but would not be returning to the Lodge.

Evans’ stepdaughter called Middlebury police the next morning to report he was OK. Middlebury police contacted Denver police and asked them to check the welfare of Evans and ask if he was there of his free will.

At a little before 6 p.m. on June 17, Denver police said they had made contact with Evans, and said he was of sound mind, knew he was in Colorado and wanted to be there.
