MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a report of an armed woman who had been drinking and threatening suicide in the Twin Circles area on Aug. 17. Police defused the situation and took the gun into evidence. The woman was taken to Porter Hospital, according to police.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Investigated two car break-ins in the Forbes Circle neighborhood on Aug. 13.

•  Received two pieces of property found within the town of Middlebury on Aug. 13. Those items included a pocketbook in the Valley View Drive area and a Stihl chainsaw located in a ditch off Route 7 South. Turns out the pocketbook had been stolen from a vehicle parked at the Briarwood Apartments.

•  Responded to a trespassing complaint at a Water Street residence on Aug. 13.

•  Received a report on Aug. 14 that a drill had recently been stolen from Paris Farmers Union on Route 7 South.

•  Cited Victoria L. Pendleton, 20, of Middlebury, for violation of her conditions of release, following an investigation in the Newton Drive area on Aug. 14.

•  Assisted the Counseling Service of Addison County with a distraught client at the Evergreen House on Court Street on Aug. 15.

•  Assisted Porter Hospital with an out-of-control, suicidal patient on Aug. 15.

•  Responded, with multiple fire and rescue organizations, to a report of a truck on fire off Route 116 about 0.1 mile north of the Bristol town line on Aug. 16. The driver, 43-year-old Jonathan Prescott of Pembroke, N.H., lost control of his vehicle while swerving to miss a deer in the road. He sustained second-degree burns  in the accident and was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital.

•  Investigated an unlawful trespassing incident at a vacant home on Court Street on Aug. 16.

•  Responded to a noise complaint at a Court Street apartment building on Aug. 18.

•  Cited Brandon Raymond, 26, of Middlebury for simple assault, after an investigation at Two Brothers Tavern on Aug. 18. Police said Raymond allegedly put his arm around a female customer’s neck repeatedly while in the tavern. Police said they measured Raymond’s blood alcohol level at 0.270 percent. For the sake of comparison, the legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.

•  Were informed on Aug. 18 of the theft of a woman’s bike from the Court Street area on Aug. 18. Police said the bike is a 1992 Kona 26-inch mountain bike.

•  Began an investigation into a junk ordinance complaint lodged against a Dutton Lane resident on Aug. 18. Police said the resident in question is alleged to have “multiple non-working vehicles, lumber and scrap metal all over his yard.”

•  Were informed of the theft of a pair of red jeans from Mendy’s on Main Street on Aug. 18. The suspect was described by store officials as being a woman, mid-20s, 5 feet 4 inches tall, with long blond hair, wearing black pants, flip-flops and a tan shoulder bag.

•  Cited Theresa L. Engel, 43, of Middlebury for retail theft, after she allegedly tried to take a bottle of wine from the Champlain Farms store on Court Street on Aug. 19. Police said they also issued Engel a no-trespass order for the store.

•  Got help for a woman who had apparently tried to take her own life in the Maple Street neighborhood on Aug. 20. Police said the woman had swallowed two pieces of glass and had cut herself on her right arm and neck. Police said the woman also had burn marks on her left ankle. Authorities took the woman to Porter Hospital.
