VERGENNES — On Aug. 30 Vergennes police cited a New Haven man for aggravated assault and burglary at a First Street home in an incident that police said was triggered by a dispute over a $50 debt.

Cited was Robert Todd Wood, 41. Police said he went to the First Street residence in the Otter Creek mobile home park and knocked on the door and demanded to be let in. Police said Wood’s alleged victim first ignored him and then told him to leave while Wood tried to break into the home; the attempted break-in triggered the burglary charge, police said.

According to the victim, who told police about the $50 debt, when he finally opened the door Wood charged in and tried to choke him, and in the struggle that followed the victim injured his shoulder.

Wood had left the scene when police arrived, but they said a witness told them a man had been seen running into nearby woods, and police found Wood there, took him into custody and cited him.

In other action between Aug. 27 and Sept. 2, Vergennes police:

•  On Aug. 27 looked for three youths who were said to be acting suspiciously in the North Street area, but did not find them.

•  On Aug. 27 on behalf of the Department of Children and Families checked the welfare of a child in a Main Street home, who was found to be fine.

•  On Aug. 27 were told of an apparent break-in attempt at a Hopkins Road storage locker.

•  On Aug. 27 began investigating the theft of pull-tab lottery tickets from the Eagles Club on New Haven Road.

•  On Aug. 27 heard a complaint from a man’s current girlfriend at a South Water Street residence that the mother of his child was mistreating the youngster; the child was found to be fine and the complaint to be unfounded.

•  On Aug. 28 handled a noise complaint at a Hillside Drive apartment.

•  On Aug. 28 dealt with a barking dog complaint on Mountain View Lane.

•  On Aug. 28 helped a family get into a locked car in Ferrisburgh on Route 7.

•  On Aug. 29 cited Crystal M. Soule, 30, of Bristol for a criminal count of driving with a suspended license (DLS) after finding her asleep at the wheel at a North Main Street business.

•  On Aug. 29 checked out a report of a car blocking traffic on New Haven Road, but found no problem.

•  On Aug. 29 helped calm an out-of-control juvenile at a King Street home.

•  On Aug. 30 cited James Cavanaugh, 19, of Burlington for possession of marijuana after stopping his car at about 2:30 a.m. on Route 7 for defective equipment.

•  On Aug. 30 looked into an apparent attempted break-in at a Green Mountain Power property on Mechanic Street; police said a window screen had been cut, but no entry gained.

•  On Aug. 30 responded to a 911 call from a Northlands Job Corps student who said she wasn’t feeling well, and turned her over to medical personnel at the center.

•  On Aug. 31 were told that a cell phone and iPod had been stolen from a car parked briefly outside a South Water Street home. Police again advised people to lock their car doors on city streets and driveways to prevent thefts.

•  On Sept. 1 responded to a minor one-car accident on North Main Street.

•  On Sept. 1 cited a 14-year-old male for a sex assault on another juvenile male, an incident police said occurred in a city home.

•  On Sept. 1 cited Robert Germaine, 32, of Williston for criminal DLS. Police said they stopped his car after their new license plate reader identified the vehicle as one owned by a driver with a suspended license and that the driver fit the description of the owner.

•  On Sept. 1 were told a woman’s cell phone had been stolen at a West Main Street yard sale when she momentarily put it down to look at items.

•  On Sept. 1 calmed a landlord-tenant dispute at a Cataract Place property.
