VERGENNES — Early on Sunday morning Vergennes police cited a Middlebury man for a criminal count of driving with a suspended license, and they said he could possibly face other charges from state wildlife officials.

Police said at about 1:45 a.m. on MacDonough Drive on Sunday they stopped a vehicle for speeding that was being driven by Shawn Frost, 27, and had a deer strapped on its hood. Police said they learned that Frost had at least five previous citations for driving with a suspended license, making this offense a criminal, not a civil charge, and he was cited and released.

Police also said there was a rifle on the front seat of Frost’s vehicle during the late-night stop, and that a state game warden would examine the deer to determine if it was taken legally during what is now bow season.

In other incidents between Oct. 15 and 21, Vergennes police:

•  On Oct. 16 dealt with several issues at Vergennes Union High School. Police spoke in the principal’s office to four students involved in an ongoing problem on one of the school’s buses, a talk they said has had a positive effect; met along with a team of school officials with a student having academic difficulties; and mentored another student after a behavioral problem.

•  On Oct. 16 received a tip about illegal drug activity in the area.

•  On Oct. 17 directed traffic around a tractor-trailer truck that ran out of gas near the intersection of Main and South Maple streets.

•  On Oct. 17 patrolled on South Maple Street after a complaint about speeding farm equipment, but found no speeding problems.

•  On Oct. 17 responded to the intersection of King and Green streets along with the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad to aid a man suffering from an apparent drug overdose; VARS took him to Porter Hospital.

•  On Oct. 17 dealt with a barking dog complaint at the corner of Monkton Road and Main Street.

•  On Oct. 18 returned to VUHS to continue mentoring a student with behavioral issues.

•  On Oct. 18 patrolled South Water Street after receiving a complaint about speeding, but found no problem.

•  On Oct. 18 checked a report of a man lying in a park off Comfort Hill, and discovered a student enjoying the sun.

•  On Oct. 18 heard complaints about John Graham Shelter residents littering near a property line from a shelter neighbor, but told the complainant it was a civil matter.

•  On Oct. 19 helped former residents of a Main Street apartment to retrieve belongings.

•  On Oct. 19 helped Vermont State Police by looking into a report of three suspicious women seen in Panton near the intersection of Pease Road and Jersey Street.

•  On Oct. 19 checked out vandalism to 1 Alden Place, where a vehicle had driven across a lawn.

•  On Oct. 20 calmed an argument at a Middlebrook Road home in Ferrisburgh until VSP could arrive to handle the situation.

•  On Oct. 20 went along with VARS to Northlands Job Corps to evaluate a drunken female student. Police and VARS learned she was incapacitated and VARS took her to Porter; police said they spoke to Northlands about other students possibly involved in a drinking incident near Otter Creek, but were unable to learn more.

•  On Oct. 20 investigated an incident of allegedly reckless driving in the parking lot of Kennedy Brothers during the city’s Haunted Warehouse Halloween celebration; police said charges are possible.

•  On Oct. 20 ordered a car to be towed that was blocking Main Street traffic and issued a ticket after an attempt to find the car’s owner to have it moved was unsuccessful.

•  On Oct. 20 were told a deer-hunting ground blind might have been stolen from the top of a vehicle at Champlain Farms; police were unable to find the blind and speculated that it might have fallen off in transit.

•  On Oct. 21 quieted a 3 a.m. noise disturbance on a South Maple Street porch.

•  On Oct. 21 were told a car had driven across a Main Street lawn.
