Vergennes Police Log: City police busy with routine calls

VERGENNES — Vergennes police dealt with a variety of issues in a busy week between Sept. 16 and 22.

In that time frame, city police:

•  On Sept. 16 dealt with a dispute between two women and a man angry because a car had been parked in his driveway. Police said the woman who owned the car thought the home was not occupied, and both women were upset because they felt threatened by the man’s behavior. Police said they are considering charging the man with disorderly conduct.

•  On Sept. 16 helped a motorist get into a locked car on First Street.

•  On Sept. 16 checked the welfare of a Walker Avenue resident, who was found to be OK.

•  On Sept. 16 provided information on a city resident to an out-of-state law enforcement agency.

•  On Sept. 16 looked into vandalism at Vergennes Union Elementary School, where roofing had allegedly been torn off. Police conducted extra patrols in the area afterward.

•  On Sept. 16 checked out the East Street area after receiving a report of a suspicious man outside an apartment building.

•  On Sept. 17 told a woman to stay away from another woman after fielding a trespassing complaint in a Main Street apartment building.

•  On Sept. 17 began investigating a complaint of bad checks passed at a Main Street business.

•  On Sept. 17 handled a minor two-car accident at the intersection of Main and South Water streets.

•  On Sept. 17 served subpoenas to two First Street residents on behalf of the Addison County State’s Attorney’s Office.

•  On Sept. 18 began investigating a complaint of a car passing a stopped school bus on Monkton Road.

•  On Sept. 18 directed traffic around a disabled truck at the intersection of Main and Green streets.

•  On Sept. 18 after receiving a complaint warned two young men in pickup trucks not to drag race on Panton Road.

•  On Sept. 19 checked a report of a possibly suicidal woman in the area of South Water and Maple streets who had jumped from a moving truck. Police said the woman denied being suicidal and said she just wanted to part ways with the other people in the vehicle. Police issued the woman court diversion paperwork for underage drinking and dropped her off at a friend’s home.

•  On Sept. 19 checked an open door at a Maple Manor home and found everything to be OK.

•  On Sept. 19 took a woman who appeared to be under stress on North Maple Street to Addison to meet friends. Police said they received a second report that she was wandering on Route 17, and returned to Addison and then took her to New York state.

•  On Sept. 19 helped a motorist get into a locked car at Vergennes Union High School.

•  On Sept. 19 dealt with a two-car accident on Main Street near the Bixby Library.

•  On Sept. 19 spoke to the family of a truant VUHS student.

•  On Sept. 19 helped Bristol police execute a search warrant that resulted in Bristol police arresting a man on drug charges.

•  On Sept. 19 aided Vermont State Police by looking for a cow reported to be running loose on Route 22A in Panton. The cow was gone when police arrived.

•  On Sept. 20 heard from the new owner of a South Maple Street home that the previous owner had removed flower boxes after the closing; police learned the ownership of the boxes was in dispute and advised the owner it was a civil court case.

•  On Sept. 20 were told that an unknown person had shot a cat with a pellet gun on West Main Street, an incident that had also occurred in the past.

•  On Sept. 20 responded to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes to calm a dispute over X-Box use; one teen left with parents.

•  On Sept. 20 told a group of young adults of legal drinking age in possession of alcohol not to hang out near the Vergennes recreation area.

•  On Sept. 21 responded on behalf of VSP to a one-car accident near Slang Road in Panton.

•  On Sept. 21 issued a no-trespass order to a woman who was panhandling at a Main Street business.

•  On Sept. 21 checked out a suspicious brush fire on Sand Road in Ferrisburgh on behalf of VSP.

•  On Sept. 21 went to Hawkins Road in Ferrisburgh on behalf of VSP to handle a report of downed trees blocking the road; there was no problem when police arrived.

•  On Sept. 22 were told a car had been stolen from Main Street, but soon received a second call from the owner saying he had just forgotten where it was parked.

•  On Sept. 22 accepted a credit card a motorist found near the Citizens Bank on Monkton Road, and returned it to its owner.

•  On Sept. 22 were told of a hit-and-run fender-bender in the Kinney Drug parking lot; police hope video may help them learn more.

•  On Sept. 22 advised a man how to get child custody paperwork.

•  On Sept. 22 accepted a small amount of marijuana for disposal from Northlands Job Corps personnel.
