VERGENNES — Vergennes police issued three citations this past weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol, all to men between the ages of 20 and 22.

On Saturday morning at about 12:30 a.m. a pickup truck parked in front of a police cruiser on Main Street, and the department’s license plate reader alerted police that the owner’s driver’s license had been civilly suspended. Police talked to the driver, whom they identified as Alex Russett, 20, of Main Street, saw an open container of beer in the truck, and smelled what they said was alcohol on his breath.

Police allege Russett then failed a sobriety test, and they cited him for DUI and ticketed him for driving with a suspended license, civil offense, for driving with an open container and for driving as a minor with a blood-alcohol content higher than 0.02. Police also issued him court diversion paperwork for being a minor in possession of a malt beverage.

At about 2:15 that morning, police saw a car allegedly fail to stop at the intersection of School and South Maple streets. They then processed Clayton R. Allen, 21, of Bristol for DUI.

At about 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, police stopped a car for allegedly going 52 mph in a 30 mph zone on West Main Street. They then cited Timothy Gebo, 22, of Panton for DUI and ticketed him for speeding.

In other incidents between Dec. 2 and 8, Vergennes police:

•  On Dec. 2 backed up Vermont State Police on Lake Street in Addison, where a man had been seen running from a home where an alarm had sounded; police could not find him, and said the home had not been entered. They theorized the alarm may have scared off an intruder.

•  On Dec. 2 checked a complaint that maintenance workers were obstructing traffic at the intersection of Main and North Maple streets, but found no problem.

•  On Dec. 2 took a report that a car had been struck by another while parked at Shaw’s Supermarket.

•  On Dec. 2 helped Middlebury police find the owner of a car.

•  On Dec. 3 responded to a minor two-car accident at Vergennes Union High School.

•  On Dec. 4 mediated a dispute between two First Street neighbors about one of them not cleaning up after a dog; the dog owner pledged to start doing so after police intervened.

•  On Dec. 4 referred to VSP a phone harassment complaint that stemmed from a VSP case.

•  On Dec. 5 responded to a Main Street fender-bender between a car and a bus.

•  On Dec. 5 resolved an incident in which a resident complained that aluminum siding had been left on his lawn; police learned it had been delivered to the wrong address, and the contractor picked it up from the station.

•  On Dec. 5 went to Northlands Job Corps to collect and dispose of a small amount of confiscated marijuana.

•  On Dec. 6 ticketed a driver on North Main Street for possession of a small amount of marijuana and disposed of the drug.

•  On Dec. 6 accepted unused prescription drugs for safe disposal.

•  On Dec. 6 helped Essex, N.Y., officials try to find an individual who was wanted for failure to register as a sex offender. Vergennes police said he was not in the area, but learned where he was out of state and told Essex police.

•  On Dec. 6 directed traffic at the scene of a Monkton Road one-car accident and dealt with a minor two-car accident on Main Street.

•  On Dec. 6 took a report for insurance purposes from Northlands that a two-way radio was stolen or missing.

•  On Dec. 6 found whipped cream cans at Falls Park that had been emptied of propellant; police said the cans had been used for huffing.

•  On Dec. 7 began investigating a case of credit card fraud at Champlain Farms.
