MONKTON — Vermont State Police are investigating a rash of thefts in the early hours of Jan. 13 that targeted both homes and vehicles across two counties.

Police believe the three burglaries and five larcenies that occurred in the towns of Charlotte and Monkton are related.

The thefts in Monkton occurred on Pond Road, Boro Hill Road, Parks Hulburt Road and Old Stage Road. The Charlotte burglary took place on Prindle Road. An unknown number of thieves stole change from unlocked cars, a Sirius satellite radio, a child’s school bag and several 5-gallon cans of fuel, police said.

Police recovered two of the 5-gallon cans in a wooded area off Pond Road in Monkton.

Sebastian Pugliese said his family was asleep on the second floor of their Charlotte home when he heard his dog barking “an unusual bark” around 2:30 a.m. on Monday morning. When he went downstairs and turned on the lights, Pugliese said, he heard a male voice that he believed was coming from outside the home. Pugliese called 911 and an officer from the Shelburne Police Department responded. The homeowner said he believed the family dog scared the perpetrator(s) off.

In the morning, Pugliese discovered that a window in the garage had been broken, and the family’s vehicles in the garage had been rummaged through. Also missing was a bag belonging o Pugliese’s daughter, which had been inside the home on the kitchen table. Pugliese said he found the contents of the bag, none of which were of any great value, strewn across the road for several hundred feet.

Patricia Kimball of Monkton said her husband discovered that someone had broken into the couple’s locked garage and ransacked the vehicle inside. Kimball said $48 worth of car wash tokens and several gas cans were taken from the garage.

Joel Provoncha said his fiancée, who was preparing to leave for work at around 5 a.m., found the doors of their car were open, and the contents of the glove compartment askew.

“What surprises me was that I thought the bright light in front that was on all night would deter them,” said Provoncha, a Monkton resident.

John Lavallee of Parks Hulburt Road in Monkton said he received a call about the burglaries from his neighbor early Monday morning. Lavallee then searched his own vehicle, and discovered that the Tom-Tom navigational device was missing.

Vermont State Police urge residents to lock their vehicles and homes to prevent such thefts. Anyone with information on any of these incidents is asked to call the state police barracks in New Haven (388-4949) or Williston (878-7111). Information can also be submitted anonymously at www.vtips.info or by texting “CRIMES” to keyword “VTIPS.”
