Vergennes Police Log: Authorities deal with BB gun vandalism

VERGENNES — Vergennes police are investigating a string of BB-gun vandalism cases in the New Haven Road and Green Street neighborhood.

Three incidents of BBs being shot through home windows on those city streets were reported last week, and a fourth was reported late the week before.

On March 17, a Green Street resident reported hearing a bang outside his home, but police found nothing. The next day, the man called back to say he had discovered the damage to a window.

On March 20, a New Haven Road homeowner and another Green Street resident reported similar damage to two more windows. The report from late the week before came from a New Haven Road homeowner.

In other incidents between March 17 and 23, Vergennes police:

•On March 17 looked for a car after its driver had failed to pay for gas at Champlain Farms, but could not find it.

•On March 17 helped the driver of a disabled car on Route 22A in Ferrisburgh.

•On March 17 responded to an accident on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh on behalf of Vermont State Police; police said two wheels broke loose from a tractor-trailer truck, one of which struck a car in the other lane. The driver of the car was taken to Fletcher Allen Health Care for observation, but was unhurt, police said.

•On March 18 calmed arguing neighbors at a Green Street apartment building.

•On March 18 dealt with a loud-music complaint at a Main Street apartment building.

•On March 18 ticketed a Northlands Job Corps student for underage drinking.

•On March 18 took a report that a cell phone had been lost at the Vergennes Opera House.

•On March 19 learned that two license plates had been stolen from a car parked at a Green Street apartment building; police found one nearby, but the second remains missing.

•On March 19 heard from a grandparent she was concerned about the welfare of her grandchildren; police reported the situation to the Department of Children and Families.

•On March 19 responded to an argument between neighbors at a Main Street apartment building about allegedly noisy children; one alleged harassment from the other about the children, and police advised her to speak to the landlord.

•On March 19 issued a no-trespass order to a former resident of a Green Street apartment building.

•On March 19 helped a motorist get into a locked car in the Shaw’s Supermarket parking lot.

•On March 20 ticketed a car in violation of the city’s overnight wintertime ban on parking on city streets.

•On March 20 dealt with a student possibly involved with drugs at Vergennes Union High School.

•On March 20 mailed to its owner a New York driver’s license that had been found.

•On March 20 cited Peter DeBono, 22, of Monkton for driving under the influence of drugs; police had stopped his car after receiving a report of erratic driving southbound on Route 7.

•On March 21 cited Denise Compagna, 22, of Rutland for simple assault and lodged her at the Chittenden County Correctional Center. Police said the assault apparently occurred in a southbound car on Route 7, and they were flagged down by the victim at the junction of Route 7 and Monkton Road. Police said they saw scratches on the victim’s face and neck, and he told them he had been scratched, bitten and punched. The victim, a Burlington man, said he was Compagna’s ex and she had knocked on his door and asked for a ride home.

•On March 21 went to East Street in Bristol to back up Bristol police and VSP at an incident.

•On March 21 helped a motorist get into a locked car on Panton Road.

•On March 21 took a report of a minor accident in the VUHS parking lot.

•On March 21 helped a resident who alleged she was being stalked on the Internet by a former acquaintance.

•On March 21 dealt with a minor two-car accident at the intersection of Main and South Maple streets.

•On March 21 responded to a barking dog complaint on White Street.

•On March 21 cited Simon Flynn, 22, of Vergennes for DUI alcohol after stopping him at the intersection of School and South Maple streets for failure to obey a stop sign.

•On March 22 calmed an arguing couple at a Second Street home.

•On March 22 handled a minor two-car accident on Mechanics Lane.

•On March 22 calmed a man and a woman at the discount food store near Kayhart Crossing.

•On March 22 took a homeless man to the Charter House in Middlebury.

•On March 23 picked up a loose dog on Bowman Road and took it to the Vergennes Animal Hospital.
