The Quakers have a venerable saying, “Speak Truth to Power.” I deeply appreciate the sentiment behind it, which is that we need to step forward and say something to those in power when we recognize that things are wrong: slavery, wars, discrimination, disrespect.
Soon after his inauguration on Jan. 20, President-elect Trump will send to the Senate the name of his nominee to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court.
The nominee will come from a list of 21 names that Trump announced during the campaign. With one exception (Sen. Mike Lee of Utah), all 21 are currently either federal judges or state supreme court judges in Midwestern, southern or Rocky Mountain states. All the names on Trump’s list have been vetted by the Heritage Foundation, the Federalist Society and other conservative advocacy groups.
Liberals everywhere are gnashing their teeth over what will happen under President Donald Trump and the GOP Congress.
Will Trump abolish Obamacare and deprive 22 million Americans of the healthcare coverage they just got? Will he cancel the Iran deal and move the world closer to nuclear war? Will he really try to deport 11 million immigrants, slash the Medicaid safety net, and penalize women who get an abortion?
The members of Havurah are deeply grateful to our Middlebury and Addison County neighbors and to friends from farther away for their expressions of solidarity — in word, deed and supportive attendance of our recent Saturday morning service, Nov. 19 — following the discovery of hostile graffiti on our door.
Though we like to think of Vermont as a refuge from baseless hatred and intolerance, we must acknowledge that it sometimes lies just below the surface even here and needs little encouragement to emerge.
