SUDBURY — The Miller Hill Farm in Sudbury has seen everything from Abenaki hunting encampments to dairying and subsistence farming to a retail/wholesale plant nursery. For current owners Carl Phelps and Nan Jenks-Jay, restoring the historic property a few hundred yards west of Otter Creek has been both a labor of love and an effort to keep a working farm working.
“We bought the place in 1998,” said Phelps. To which Jenks-Jay quipped, “It had 18 outbuildings and every barn had three feet of manure in it.”
VERMONT — Thirty Vermont 4-H club members competed at the Eastern States Exposition 4-H dairy show in West Springfield, Mass., Sept. 15-18, walking away with several championships.
Two Addison County youths captured first place ribbons: Addy Parsons of Weybridge and Jonathan Flores-Torres of Ferrisburgh.
VERGENNES— Local screenwriter Jay Dubberly will lead a new six-week class at the Bixby Memorial Library on Mondays from 6-8 p.m. The course will focus on preparing would-be writers for the grueling process of writing a longer work.
STARKSBORO — It’s a golden early fall day. Across from the beaver pond along a stretch of Route 17 where it snakes toward the spine of the Green Mountains stand two acres of trellises, each row as high as a house. Twirling up 18-foot lengths of twine, 2,000 hop plants reach toward the sun, laden with cones (the name for those blossoms that make beer taste so good to some).

Student speakers, joined by Ben & Jerry’s Rob Michalak, the company’s Global Director of Social Mission, talked about what peace meant to them and what actions the school community could take.
