Bugging out! After losing a bet with students, Mary Hogan principals chow on insects

MARY HOGAN ELEMENTARY School principals Tom Buzzell and Steve Lindeman didn’t have to eat their words last week, but they did have to eat bugs after the Middlebury school’s students met the principals’ challenge by reading 562,653 minutes during a month-long read-a-thon. The students erupted with screams and laughter with each crunchy bite. Students pictured are: Jolee Heffernan, Amelia Coburn, Kylie Bean, Dylan Field, Julian Cotell and Aislynne McGill.

Grant provides stability for Ferrisburgh slaughterhouse

FERRISBURGH — A recently awarded state grant will help a Ferrisburgh slaughterhouse stay in business and preserve its dozen jobs while it seeks to expand into a new, larger plant in Middlebury, said Middlebury Business Development Director Jamie Gaucher.

The Ferrisburgh selectboard this summer agreed at Gaucher’s suggestion to apply for a $25,000 Regional Economic Development Grant from the Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services. Those economic development grants are intended to improve infrastructure to help a business in a town.

Maritime museum names new director

MIDDLEBURY — The board of directors of Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (LCMM) announces the appointment of J. Michael “Mike” Smiles as the museum’s new executive director. Smiles assumes the role from Erick Tichonuk, who is stepping down from the position. He begins the leadership role on Jan. 5.

Salisbury home a beacon for the holidays

SALISBURY — If Santa Claus and his reindeer lose their way over Addison County on Christmas Eve and are having trouble finding Salisbury, there will be no need to panic. All they have to do is scan below for a sight that may even be visible from outer space: Wayne and Diane Smith’s residence at 44 North Pond Road.

It is home to one of the most festive and illuminated outdoor holiday displays in the region.

Bristol Elementary students learn computer coding

BRISTOL — Bristol Elementary School students will be the first to tell you that a 21st-century education is not just about the reading, writing and arithmetic. These kids are computer programmers, too.

Every student, from kindergarten through sixth grade, for the last week took part in computer coding lessons taught by Bristol Elementary librarian Kyra Ginalski and Gillian McGarvey, a parent who works in the technology sector.

Beau Ties Ltd. continues to grow

MIDDLEBURY — It was in 1993 that the late Bill Kenerson had grown so frustrated in his attempts to find good quality bow ties that he decided to make them himself. So he and his wife, Deborah Venman, set up a room in their home for the production of ties under name “Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont.”
