Frederick Douglass' alternative July 4 speech to be read aloud

FERRISBURGH —Rokeby Museum in Ferrisbugh will host a free community reading of Frederick Douglass’ most famous speech at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 3.

Asked to deliver a Fourth of July oration, Douglass refused. Instead, he delivered his powerful condemnation of American hypocrisy — “What to the slave is 4th of July” — on July 5, 1852. His words ring true more than 150 years later, and the speech is widely considered to be his best.

Doll house raffle to help fund repair of Salisbury church steeple

SALISBURY — The five-year campaign to restore the tower of the Salisbury Congregational Church was in the home stretch this spring when it hit a new snag. The clock and bell stages were repaired last season, and the bell rang out over the village for the first time in years on Christmas Eve. However, painters scraping the spire this spring discovered that it was also in serious condition. Funds were diverted from painting and other repairs to deal with the emergency.

Middlebury energy committee to host free seminar on June 30

MIDDLEBURY — Many people want to reduce home energy use but aren’t sure where to start.Zero Energy Now is a new comprehensive home energy savings program, providing efficiency upgrades (including air sealing, insulation and heat pumps), renewable heating sources (such as replacing an oil furnace with a wood/pellet system) and solar power. When combined, these steps can reduce fossil fuel use by 50 percent to 100 percent. One call connects homeowners with a certified energy contractor (CEC) who will coordinate all of the improvements.

Middlebury energy committee to host free seminar on June 30

MIDDLEBURY — Don Mayer, David Sellers and Jito Coleman will offer a panel discussion titled “The Roots of Renewable Energy in Vermont: North Wind Power” on Tuesday, June 28, at 6 p.m. in the Community Room of the Ilsley Library in Middlebury. The three will share stories about the beginnings of North Wind Power in Warren in the early 1970s.

Ag students recognized for land stewardship

MONTPELIER — Two local students received the Land Stewards Award from the Vermont Land Trust on May 27. The award, now in its 11th year, acknowledges the hard work of tomorrow’s agricultural and forestry leaders with an unrestricted cash prize of $250.

Hoop dance on exhibit at Bixby Library this Friday

VERGENNES — Bixby Library will kick off its participation in the Vergennes Arts Walk this season on Friday, June 24, with art exhibits on all three floors and a special hoop dance performance by Rebeccah Brinton.

Sean Dye’s rich acrylics featuring both Vermont and Southwestern themes make up the main- and second-floor exhibits. Vergennes Union High School alumni Genevieve Cohn and Dustin Dattilio will exhibit in the Otter Creek Book Sale ground floor space.

Neat Repeats names grant recipients

MIDDLEBURY — The volunteers at the Neat Repeats consignment shop on Bakery Lane in Middlebury have awarded $12,119 in the spring 2016 grant cycle, as follows:

Payments of $3,750 to HOPE for housing costs, $1,000 to Festival on-the-Green, $900 in sports opportunities to four recipients, $750 in educational opportunities to four recipients, $619 in family assistance to five recipients, $500 toward the Mary Hogan School playground, $500 to Pocock Rocks, $500 to Addison Central Teens, and $500 to St. Peter’s Cemetery for monument repair.

Abenaki to present their history at Maritime Museum

FERRISBURGH — What does it mean to be Indian in Vermont? What does it mean to be an indigenous artist? On June 25 and 26 members of Vermont’s Abenaki community gather at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Ferrisburgh to present their own history and heritage directly to the public.
