Credit Union in Vergennes is robbed

VERGENNES — Vermont Federal Credit Union in Vergennes was robbed on Friday afternoon, a patron of the financial institution said.

Vermont State and Vergennes police in brief phone conversations confirmed the robbery of a Vergennes bank but could not could not confirm to the Independent which one.

A patron of the Vermont Federal Credit Union branch in Middlebury said she overheard a phone conversation at around 4:15 p.m. involving credit union employees talking about a robbery at the Vergennes branch.

Police arrest seven in connection with Ferrisburgh break-ins

FERRISBURGH — State troopers on Friday morning arrested seven people — four adult men and three minor girls — in connection with a series of break-ins at camps in Ferrisburgh.

The adults arrested are: 19-year-old Seamus C. Doolan of Essex Junction; Brian J. MacKenzie, 18, of South Burlington; Nathan P. Morrill, 20, of Burlington and Matthew J. Shepardson, 21, of Hinesburg. Police issued juvenile citations to the girls and released them into the custody of their parents.

River Watch Collaborative to train volunteers this weekend

MIDDLEBURY — Like the rest of us, river samplers for the Addison County River Watch Collaborative are crossing their fingers for the arrival of warm weather.

“Our water sampling season is scheduled to begin on April 8,” said River Watch Coordinator Matt Witten. “So we need the ice to melt just to have safe access to flowing streams.”

Brandon community meeting set for April 6 to talk about flooding

But ice jams, snow melt and showers also raise the level of our streams and rivers. Our thoughts turn to the risk of flooding and the damage that may result.

Middlbury men's tennis wins out West

WHITTIER, Calif. — The Middlebury College men’s tennis team, ranked No. 3 in the most recent NCAA Division III poll, kept up its winning ways on its annual spring break trip to California, improving to 7-0 heading into a match played late on Tuesday.

On Sunday, the Panthers posted a pair of 9-0 victories in matches played at Whittier College over the host Poets and again in the evening against Pacific.

Panther baseball team off to tough start in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Middlebury College baseball team got off to an 0-6 start in its spring break trip to Tucson, Ariz., and will hope to bounce back this weekend, still in Tucson, in a three-game set vs. NESCAC West foe Williams.

On Saturday, St. John’s of Minnesota (9-6) swept a twin bill from the Panthers, 12-4 and 17-9, as Middlebury’s season opened.

Panthers swim an NCAA meet

SHENANDOAH, Texas — Middlebury College swimmers Jamie Hillas and Stephan Koenigsberger earned All-American honors at last week’s NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships in Shenandoah, Texas, an event hosted by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Hillas finished sixth in the woman’s 100-meter breaststroke in 1:03.18, earning All-American status for the second straight year and matching her finish in the 2014 NCAA meet.

Middlebury Police Log: MUHS student cited for disorderly conduct

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on March 16 cited a juvenile student at Middlebury Union High School for disorderly conduct by electronic communication and hate-motivated crime, after that male student allegedly made threats via Facebook judged to be of a threatening and racist nature.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a report of the theft of a dog from the backyard of a Harrow Way home on March 16. Turns out the alleged “thief” was trying to return the dog, which had run away from home, police said.
