Bristol firehouse cost estimate due

BRISTOL — The Bristol Fire Facility Committee is expected at a meeting this Tuesday evening, May 19, to unveil a construction estimate for a new West Street firehouse.

That meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be held at the Bristol Federated Church at 37 North St.

Tigers on top at six-team track & field meet

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams each prevailed at a six-team Thursday home meet that included county rivals Mount Abraham and Vergennes.

Two athletes won multiple events: Eagle freshman Lydia Pitts picked up three victories, and Tiger senior sprinter Kat Townsend raced to the front twice.

Tigers girls' lax wins three in a row

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team emerged from three games in four days last week with three wins and a 7-1 record, good for a first-place tie in Division I.

In each game, the Tigers outscored their opponents in the second half. And, after allowing nine goals in the first half vs. high-scoring Burlington on Wednesday, the Tiger defense allowed only 13 goals over the next two-and-a-half games, including a one-goal win at Mount Anthony on Tuesday and a three-goal decision over visiting Mount Mansfield on Saturday.

Otters golf finishes 4th at div. championships

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School golf team finished fourth in Wednesday’s Southern Conference Division III championships, held at the Neshobe Golf Club. The Otters, led by Tom Kingsley’s 96, shot a 397.

Mill River won the Division II crown with a 369, led by medalist Johann Russell (83).

Woodstock (392) came in second, with Fair Haven (396) and OV (397) right behind. Defending champion Springfield (420) took fifth.

Rounding out OV’s scorers were Colin Nicklaw (99) and Joey Scarborough and Eric Laughlin (101 each).

Boys lacrosse: Tigers pelt Spaulding; Eagles break even; Commodores lose in triple overtime

ADDISON COUNTY — In area boys’ lacrosse action in the latter half of last week, Middlebury won a road game, Mount Abraham won once and lost once, and Vergennes lost in triple overtime on the road.  

TIGERS

On Friday, the Tigers pelted host Spaulding, 20-5. Details of the game were not available. The Tigers improved to 7-2 and moved into first place in Division I, percentage points ahead of Essex (8-2). MUHS will visit Essex on Tuesday and then host a makeup game vs. Mount Mansfield on Wednesday.

Tiger tennis: Boys sweep three; girls split pair of contests

ADDISON COUNTY — In tennis play last week, the Middlebury Union High School boys’ team swept three matches to improve to 6-3, while the Tiger girls’ team split a pair of contests and stands at 10-2.

On Wednesday, the Tiger boys picked up their fourth and fifth wins of the spring by defeating host North Country twice, 7-0 and 6-1. The Falcons forfeited doubles matches in both contests, which were played with single-set matches to eight games to allow both to be completed after an earlier rainout.

Body cameras lead Bristol to update police policies

BRISTOL — Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs on Monday updated the Bristol selectboard on his department’s policies, most notably changes in its Video/Audio/Still Recording Equipment Policy that were triggered by the department’s purchase of body cameras.

Town Administrator Therese Kirby said the previous policy was so outdated that it “used to refer to tapes.” The updated policy spells out how the digital footage and audio captured by the body cameras is stored, how it may be accessed, and who may access the material.

Police celebrate Panton boy's honesty

VERGENNES — The City of Vergennes and the Vergennes Police Department on May 7 jointly presented a commendation to a young Panton resident for turning over to police money that he found immediately after a March 27 bank robbery in Vergennes.

Police said Isaac Preston, 8, came across three $20 bills near the Vermont Federal Employees Credit Union branch in the United Technologies Corp. building on Panton Road just after the robbery, showed them to his father, Eric Preston, and then gave them to a Vergennes police officer on the scene.

Price of city land deal revealed to be $20,000

VERGENNES — Vergennes officials revealed at Tuesday’s city council meeting that if aldermen approve a proposed purchase of a small riverfront parcel from Mayor Bill Benton and his sister the sale price would be $20,000.

City Manager Mel Hawley also said on Wednesday that the appraised price of the 0.4-acre parcel, which is next to the city docks and also fronts on Macdonough Drive, came in at $30,000.
