VERGENNES — With a final wrinkle officially ironed out, the Vergennes City Council on Tuesday approved spending $20,000 from the city’s Water Tower Fund to buy a 0.4-acre waterfront parcel from Mayor Bill Benton and his sister, Betsey Benton.

The long-awaited deal for a parcel next to the city docks — valued at $30,000 by Ferrisburgh appraiser Charlene Stavenow — had been held up until the title to an adjacent sliver of land could be cleared up.

Shoreland law seen as aiding lakes and residents

Posted on July 9, 2015 |

FERRISBURGH — Addison County lakefront property owners have been skeptical about Vermont’s Shoreland Protection Act, which became law in July 2014.

For example, at a February 2014 legislative breakfast in Bridport several attendees panned draft versions of the bill, and some local lawmakers also came out against it during the legislative process.

Rolling thrones: Outhouse race brings humor, drama as Bristol celebrates 4th

BRISTOL — For Andrew Lafleur, Justin Stone and Blair Stone, the giant American flag draped over Bristol’s Main Street between two fully extended fire ladders on July 4 acted like the Arc de Triomphe does in Paris for the Tour de France winner.

The flag — donated and lofted for Bristol’s Independence Day celebration by the Addison County Firefighters Association — served as the backdrop for their victory in a famous athletic event, the 37th annual Great Bristol Outhouse Race.

MIDDLEBURY — Home cooking did not help the young Addison County American Legion team, which dropped its first three games at Middlebury College’s baseball diamond this past Thursday and Sunday to remain winless this summer.

AC came close on Thursday vs. South Burlington, rallying from a 5-1 deficit to force extra innings before falling, 7-5. In a Sunday doubleheader, however, visiting Essex steadily pulled away in both games for the sweep, 12-1 and 12-0.

Aldermen peg city's tax rate at 75 cents

Posted on July 6, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — As expected, the Vergennes City Council on June 30 increased the Vergennes municipal tax rate by 2.5 cents to 75 cents.

That increase will add $25 to city tax bills per $100,000 of assessed value. Aldermen had been targeting that number for months and in their recent meetings had made major cuts to a draft budget.

Aldermen also approved a 2015-2016 general fund budget of $2,121,912. That number is an increase of about $34,000, or 1.6 percent, over the 2014-2015 general fund budget of about $2.088 million.

Rainy June bogs down farmers

By Andy Kirkaldy

floodedcorn8838.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — According to the National Weather Service, June’s rainfall in Burlington of 8.67 inches proved to be the third highest since 1884, trailing only 1922 and 2013.

Nobody had to tell Vermont farmers that news.

“Every year we have our little times and issues with wet weather,” said Peter James, co-owner of Weybridge’s Monument Farms. “But this year it’s been the entire month of June.”

Heavy rain and clouds in June pose special problems for dairy farmers.

FERRISBURGH — Those involved in the dispute over Ferrisburgh farmer Wayne Stearns’ propane cannon talk about shattered dreams — and the shattered peace in a neighborhood along Lake Champlain.

From mid-July through mid-August last summer, Stearns, 43, fired the cannon — which makes a sound his neighbors liken to a shotgun — every minute or so from dawn to dusk.
