Town eyes sewer, auditor issues

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectboard members at their Feb. 10 meeting put in motion a plan to eliminate elected and unfilled town jobs they say are no longer needed — that of three auditors.

Doing so will require a change to the town charter that will in turn require approval by the Vermont Legislature, which can only come after two public hearings and a town-wide vote in Middlebury to be held on April 28.

FERRISBURGH — Two challengers who would be first-time selectmen, but have civic experience, are contending for one open seat on the Ferrisburgh selectboard.

Dennis Armell and Michael “Red” Muir are seeking to replace Sally Torrey, who will step down after a decade on the selectboard. Torrey, however, will be on the Town Meeting Day ballot in a race for delinquent tax collector with former longtime town clerk Chet Hawkins.

Incumbent Selectman Jim Benoit is also on the ballot, but is running unopposed for a two-year term on the board.

BRISTOL — A big lift from the bench helped the No. 2 Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team get past scrappy visiting No. 17 Hartford on Tuesday, 31-24, in a first-round Division II playoff game.

Freshman forward Emma Carter scored six of her game-high 13 points in the final 1:57 of the second quarter to help erase a Hurricane lead and forge a 16-16 halftime tie.

Also on the floor during that stretch and during the entire second half, during which the Eagles allowed just eight points, was junior guard Dani Forand, usually a reserve.

FERRISBURGH — Although a string of appeals and court cases may show that not everyone in Ferrisburgh is lovin’ it, the new McDonald’s Restaurant that will complete Champlain Oil Company’s new Route 7 development should be up and running next week, said COCO President Tony Cairns on Monday.

When the doors open under the golden arches, it will finish Cairns’ and COCO’s roughly seven-year effort to build a gas station, convenience store and restaurant on the former home of the Ferrisburgh Roadhouse and Burdick’s Country Kitchen.
