Mount Abe baseball reaches D-II final

SOUTH DUXBURY — The No. 8 Mount Abraham Union High School baseball team claimed another higher-seeded Division II tournament victim on Monday, blanking host No. 5 Harwood, 3-0, in a semifinal.

The 8-11 Eagles will play another upset-minded squad in the D-II final: No. 6 Bellows Falls.

While the Eagles have been dispatching No. 1 Lamoille (14-4) and the No. 5 Highlanders (12-6), the 11-8 Terriers were ousting No. 3 Lake Region (14-4) and No. 2 U-32 (13-5).

Mount Anthony outlasts MUHS in D-I softball semi-final

BENNINGTON — Host No. 2 Mount Anthony edged the No. 3 Middlebury Union High School softball team, 2-1, in a Division I semifinal on Tuesday, ending one of the best seasons in years for the Tiger program.

The 18-1 Patriots prevailed despite being outhit by the Tigers, 10-6, as MUHS (16-3) left 10 runners on base, including the tying and go-ahead runs on second and third with one out in the top of the seventh. The loss snapped the Tigers’ 11-game winning streak.

Cidery signs lease for Kennedy Brothers space

VERGENNES — The owners of Shacksbury Cider and the Kennedy Brothers Marketplace on May 27 made final a lease that will allow the Shoreham cidery to set up its brewing, bottling, warehousing and shipping operations, plus offices and a tasting room, in the Vergennes landmark.

Demolition work in the white creamery building on Kennedy Brothers’ north end should start this week, and Shacksbury co-founder Colin Davis hopes to be doing business and hosting events in the company’s new headquarters by this fall.

Eagles softball tops Commodores: reach D-II semis

VERGENNES — With solid defense, a 17-hit attack and four-hit pitching from junior Rachael McCormick, the top-seeded Mount Abraham Union High School softball team coasted in its Division II quarterfinal vs. visiting Vergennes on Friday, 11-1.

The 15-3 Eagles avenged their only D-II loss of the season — their other setbacks have come to the Nos. 1 and 3 seeds in D-I.  

Next the Eagles will host No. 4 Fair Haven on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The 14-4 Slaters have won 14 of 15 games after an 0-3 start.

Tiger girls best Rice; MMU next in D-I lacrosse semifinals

MIDDLEBURY — The No. 5 Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team put the clamps on visiting No. 5 Rice during a Saturday quarterfinal, winning by 8-3 to advance to a Division I semifinal on Tuesday vs. No. 1 Mount Mansfield.  That result followed an 18-2 home first-round win on Wednesday over No. 13 Spaulding.

Athletes win at state meet

EAST MONTPELIER — Led by three victories by Mount Abraham Union High School sophomore Lydia Pitts, local athletes combined for 11 event wins at Saturday’s Division II track and field championships, hosted by U-32 High School.

Middlebury fared best as a team, finishing third in both the girls and boys’ competitions. Buoyed by Pitts, the Eagle girls took fourth, and the Eagle boys’ were sixth. Vergennes scored points in one event in each competition: The Commodore girls were 12th, and they VUHS boys were 11th.

Mount Abe's married athletic directors made job-share a success

BRISTOL — No matter how much people have enjoyed a job over the years, a time can come when a new direction looks like a good idea.

At least that’s how married couple Jeff and Mary Stetson explained their decision to step down this June from their unique 25-year partnership as Mount Abraham Union High School’s co-athletic directors.

Jeff, 58, and Mary, 55, who will still teach part-time and coach at Mount Abe, can readily offer highlights from their years sharing the AD job.

New pumper fire truck sought for Vergennes

VERGENNES — On Tuesday, May 24, the Vergennes City Council discussed a sewer rate hike (see related story here) and also:

•  Heard from City Manager Mel Hawley that costs at the city’s recycling center could rise by around 10 percent, but that he did not have final numbers yet.

Tiger softball advances in playoffs

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School softball team, seeded No. 3 in the Division I playoffs, didn’t really bring its hitting shoes to its first-round game against No. 14 Champlain Valley on Tuesday, but the Tigers still had enough to take care of the Redhawks, 9-1.

The Tigers will next host No. 6 Brattleboro (13-4) in a game scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Local connection sparks Panther women's lax to national title

PHILADELPHIA — The Middlebury women’s lacrosse team won its sixth NCAA Division III title and first since 2004 on Sunday, when the Panthers put the clamps on NESCAC rival Trinity in a final played a Talen Energy Stadium in Philadelphia, 9-5.

That victory followed the 22-1 Panthers’ convincing 16-11 win over top-seeded and undefeated Cortland State in Saturday’s semifinal.

A strong local connection helped the Panthers take the crown.
