MUHS Softball gets key win

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School softball team on Tuesday earned arguably its most important win of the spring, a 6-1 decision over a Division I Colchester squad that showed up at MUHS with a 12-2 record, a nine-game winning streak, and victories over Essex and BFA-St. Albans on its résumé.

The result also pushed the Tigers up to .500 at 6-6 with one game left in the regular season, and moved them into sixth place in the D-II standings with one game to go in the regular season, at home vs. D-I St. Johnsbury (9-6) at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Area softball squads record some victories

ADDISON COUNTY — In recent local high school softball action, Mount Abraham, Otter Valley, Middlebury and Vergennes all won at least once.

The regular season will conclude this week, and the Vermont Principals’ Association will announce playoff pairings on Monday.

On May 21, the Eagles edged visiting North Country, 3-1, as Rachael McCormick tossed a complete-game four-hitter and also slugged an RBI triple. Ashley Boise contributed two hits to the Eagle cause.

Tigers girls lacrosse splits two one-goal contests

HINESBURG — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team split two close games late last week and entered the final week of regular season play with an 8-3 record, good for fourth place in the tightly packed Division I standings.

The Tigers were set for a Wednesday home game with rival South Burlington and are scheduled to conclude their regular season at Burlington on Saturday at 11 a.m.; MUHS edged the Seahorses at home, 12-11, earlier this month. The Vermont Principals’ Association will release playoff pairings on Monday.

Tennis: MUHS boys, OV girls out of playoffs; Tiger girls No. 4

 MIDDLEBURY — In high school tennis playoff action, the Middlebury boys and the Otter Valley girls were eliminated on Tuesday in Division I and D-II, respectively.

The MUHS girls finished at 11-3 and drew the No. 4 seed in D-I. They will entertain No. 13 North Country (4-8) on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Tiger girls defeated the Falcons twice this spring, both on May 15, by 5-1 scores at home.

VUHS board will hold Saturday session to craft new budget plan

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board has decided to meet this Saturday morning to make final a new budget proposal to present to Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on June 9.

The meeting will be held at 9 a.m. in the VUHS library.

The board on May 11 originally planned on gathering on May 28 to adopt a spending plan for the 2015-2016 school year, but Superintendent JoAn Canning said on Monday that board members in deciding to move the meeting date wanted more time to present a new budget to residents.

Local track and field teams making strides toward success

BRISTOL — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ and Harwood girls’ track and field teams prevailed at a six-team meet hosted by Mount Abraham on a steamy Monday afternoon.

With many local athletes experimenting in different events, the Tiger boys scored 194 points to defeat Harwood (111), Enosburg (84), Mount Abe (62), Fair Haven (34) and Lamoille (14).

The Harwood girls piled up 164.5 points, ahead of Fair Haven (116), Mount Abe (108), Enosburg (76.5) and MUHS (63).

Panther women's lacrosse advances to NCAA Final Four

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team emerged from an upset-filled section of the NCAA Division III bracket and will play this weekend in Philadelphia in the program’s 15th Final Four in what is longtime coach Missy Foote’s final season.

MJCC again floats plan for childcare in Vergennes

VERGENNES — Mary Johnson Children’s Center, which has long been established in Middlebury and has operated summer programs in Vergennes and elsewhere in the county, is once again working toward building a childcare center in the Little City.

Mary Johnson’s goal, said Co-director Barbara Saunders, is what Mary Johnson officials believe is a badly needed Vergennes childcare center to serve 30 preschoolers, one that would be built on a 1.5-acre Armory Lane lot near the city’s three-year-old senior center.

Bristol firehouse cost estimate due
