MIDDLEBURY — After narrowing a field of more than 300 film submissions down to 95 final selections; arranging space in 10 local establishments for events and discussions; planning a party with two bands, food and drink on the Middlebury town green; and nailing down all of the little details, organizers are just about ready to invite the world to Addison County’s shire town next week for the inaugural Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival (MNFF).

Swimming holes bring relief, ire in summer

BRANDON — Ginger Gould, who grew up in Forest Dale and still lives there, says there’s nothing better than a refreshing dip in a cool Vermont stream on a hot summer’s day. Kids walk from up to a mile away on the hot pavement to take a dip near her home in the shallow pool in the Neshobe River created by a cluster of rocks just off of Route 73 in Brandon.

“They’ve been doing it for as long as the river’s been there, and that’s fine with me,” Gould said.

Clippings: Teaching and motoring in first gear

On a muggy July day I found myself parked on the side of the road somewhere near Whiting waiting for the car to move. The sky was the color of old denim and the distant ridgeline of the Green Mountains was in shades of green and purple. Ahead, the pavement cut a broad, jet-black ribbon straight toward the horizon.

The car had shuddered and died. A stunning stream of expletives ensued from my girlfriend’s mouth.

“I’ve had it,” she said, her jaw set in frustration. “I quit.”

BRISTOL — After witnessing the action at last year’s demolition derby at the Addison County Fair and Field Days, Ethan Heffernan decided it was time he entered a demolition derby car of his own.

“I thought it was pretty entertaining and a good time, so I wanted to get in on it this year,” the 22-year-old Bristol resident said. “I got myself a car for 200 bucks and said, ‘What the hell, why not?’”

NEW HAVEN — In the much-anticipated summertime tradition, crowds at the Addison County Fair and Field Days flocked to the dirt track Wednesday and Thursday evening to see cars trucks and vans meet in battle. After six qualifiers and two features, vehicles were reduced to smoking, twisted metal, and champions left with checks in their pockets and trophies in hand.

Middlebury pitcher takes his game west

DENVER — The Middlebury College baseball team suffered a rough season this past spring; the Panthers managed just four wins. But, despite the losing record, junior relief pitcher Mark Dickerson’s enthusiasm for the game remained strong as the NESCAC season drew to a close in early May.

So the six-foot, four-inch hurler decided to take his baseball skills west — at least for the summer.

NEW HAVEN — Among the new features at the 68th annual Addison County Fair & Field Days next week will be a small item that many visitors won’t even see — a new, more complex ticket.

After a rash of fraudulent tickets cost the nonprofit that runs the fair almost $12,000 last year, organizers have taken steps to make sure it never happens again.

Mud, sweat & blisters, oh my! Benson's obstacle race center puts athletes through their paces

BENSON — As we walked toward the starting line in Benson earlier in July, Rita Beardwood pointed at my ankles and laughed heartily.

“Say goodbye to your socks,” she said.

Beardwood’s joke held a degree of seriousness. After several days of rain, anyone setting foot on the Shale Hill Adventure Farm obstacle course was going to emerge needing a shower and clean clothes.

Wet weather, pesticides sting county's beekeepers

ADDISON COUNTY — Andrew Munkres’s summer has gotten off to a busy start. As a bus driver during the school year, he looks forward to summer when he can return to his 150 hives at the Lemonfair Honeyworks in Cornwall.

“It’s pretty hard work for a summer vacation,” he said. “In the spring when the beekeeping is ramping up and the school year is slowing down, it’s pretty tough juggling both.”

BRISTOL — The price is right. That was the message Bristol voters sent Tuesday by approving a $3.19 million bond to build a new firehouse.

The 415-140 decision came at the end of a two-year process, during which Bristol’s Fire Facility Building Committee evaluated some 31 possible sites, discussed plans and held informational meetings.
