ADDISON COUNTY — As most Vermont drivers know, a new law that went into effect this past Wednesday makes it illegal to use a variety of electronic devices — including hand-held cell phones and MP3 players — while driving on Vermont roads. Violators are subject to fines and points assessed against their driving record.

In the early days, local police had not charged anyone for infractions of the law, but they said they fully intend to enforce it.

MIDDLEBURY — Linda Goodspeed of Rutland is a freelance writer who lost her sight 25 years ago. Today, she uses a variety of tools to help her with everyday tasks. Her laptop computer uses a program called JAWS, for Job Access With Speech, that reads items on the computer screen to her. She uses an app on her iPhone to count denominations of money, a scanner to read mail and a barcode reader to read food labels in the pantry.

“The world has really opened up for blind people, thanks to digital technology,” she said.

BRISTOL — After 25 years of restricted mobility and chronic pain, 47-year-old James “Bub” Cole of Bristol stepped on a track last month and ran for the first time in a quarter century. The experience, he said, was unforgettable.

“Imagine wearing glasses and then losing them,” Cole said. “After 25 years, you finally get them back and you can see what you’ve been missing.”

MIDDLEBURY — What do Mark Twain, Toni Morrison, George Orwell, Kurt Vonnegut and John Steinbeck all have in common? All are world-renowned authors with some of the most widely recognized works translated into multiple languages, and their works are also some of the most widely censored, challenged or banned.

But this Tuesday, seven Vermont writers gathered at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society in Middlebury to read from those authors’ best works — for precisely that reason.

Clippings: On 9/11 anniversary, echoes of Hunter S. Thompson

I was in fifth grade on Sept. 11, 2001. It was a Tuesday, and that meant gym class. Wearing our standard school uniform (navy blue sweatpants and white t-shirts), we walked single file with gym sneakers gripped to our chests to the local recreation center in downtown Brattleboro.

We returned to our desks two hours later to find the nation in a state of emergency.

NEW HAVEN — On the first night of the No. 1 Auto Parts Demolition Derby last week, 64 vehicular hulks that would never be allowed on public streets each made a hard, metal-twisting drive for victory and a piece of a $1,400 cash purse in what is arguably the biggest night of the Addison County Fair and Field Days. The lineup included 22 six-cylinder beaters, 22 four-cylinder rattletraps, 10 eight-cylinders jalopies, eight past-their-prime minivans and two pickup trucks that didn’t have a lot of pickup left in them.

I was fixing a cup of coffee a few weeks ago, when I mentioned to a colleague that I was moving.

I reminded her that that was in December. Now it was nearing summer and the lease was be expiring. I was moving across town to an apartment I would sublet until August.

“And what’re you going to do at the end of the summer?” she probed. I replied with a shrug.
