Clippings: Fear and the return to running

On the morning of Jan. 31, I was in Marlboro, in southern Vermont, drinking tea with my parents in their living room. Conversation was halting and interspersed with tears and bursts of laughter. On the floor in front of us lay the family dog, wrapped in the blanket that was to be her funeral shroud. She had died early that morning.

RIPTON — With two inches of rain forecast late last week and rapid swings in temperatures, Mike Hussey faced a challenge getting the cross-country ski racing course at the Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton ready to go for the Middlebury College Winter Carnival. Unfortunately, such challenging conditions for ski areas have been almost the norm this winter.

“It’s hard to do anything with the snow while it’s raining,” said Hussey, the director of Rikert, said on Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf campus in Ripton

MIDDLEBURY — For students in the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center’s Forestry and Natural Resource Management Program, the taste of victory at the FFA Winter Forestry Competition was sweet — or, to be more specific, it tasted like maple syrup.

The class of seven students got an opportunity to demonstrate their skills this past January at the statewide competition at the Vermont Farms Expo in Essex Junction. While the program won first in the state, juniors Greg Ouellette of Bristol took first and Jacob LaFleche of Panton took third as individuals.

BRISTOL — For students in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union, the day is hardly over when the afternoon bell rings. They’re not just participating in sports or getting some extra tutoring from a teacher; rather, in four of the five ANeSU elementary schools, students can be found learning everything from tai chi, to cooking, to making jewelry.

The workshops and classes are part of ANeSU’s Expanded Learning Program (ELP), a series of after-school experiential learning classes held in six-week sessions throughout the school year and the summer.

Granville post office closing, piece of community is lost

By Evan Johnson

GRANVILLE — After the close of business hours this Friday, post office box users in the town of Granville will have to go elsewhere to pick up their mail.

Since 1963, the U.S. Postal Service has leased one room in a Route 100 home next to the general store to serve as the post office; it hosts 50 P.O. boxes used by Granville residents. Citing health issues, landlords Alice “Pete” and William Parrish made an emergency suspension of the lease late last month, forcing the post office to vacate.

MIDDLEBURY — Pierre Vachon loves bad movies. The body piercer, professional wrestler, voice-over artist and actor enjoys everything from their cringe-worthy acting to overdone special effects to lame story line. But most of all, he enjoys laughing at them.

“I love film train wrecks,” said Vachon, whose day job is at Frog Alley Tattoo and Leatherworks in Middlebury. “Because people actually went into it thinking they were making something good. It’s so bad I have to figure out where they went wrong.”

Clippings: Resolution for 2016: Say 'hell yes'

At six in the morning on New Year’s Day, the vomit was everywhere — stretching from the living room, down the hall and into the dining room, soaked deep into the carpets. Exhausted and overwhelmed, my hands shook, my head reeled and my stomach curled into something small, sour and tightly wound.

No snow! Winter-oriented businesses are suffering

ADDISON COUNTY — A year ago at this time, Vermonters could look out their windows at hillsides blanketed in a foot of snow in some places. This year, that same view yields mostly brown ground, trees devoid of leaves and not a snowflake to be found. In past weeks, temperatures have risen as high as into the 40s and 50s.
