Gregory Dennis: PSB stifling input on pipeline project

Posted on August 25, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

News and Notes:

If there was ever any doubt how publicly disoriented the state’s Department of Public Service really is when it comes to the fracked gas pipeline now making its way through the county — well, department Commissioner Chris Recchia put that doubt to rest a few days ago.

Not long after the Public Service Board tried to ban the public from a public hearing on the pipeline, Recchia made it clear that the department is sick of hearing from members of the public who oppose the pipeline.

Gregory Dennis: Pot, politics and the hipster quotient

Posted on August 11, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

Notes from a dry sunny summer. Pot first, then politics…

I’ve met my hipster quotient this summer by visiting the Portlands of Oregon and Maine. While Portland, Maine, has what must be the world’s business Whole Foods and a high ratio of tattoos to humans; the tattoo-per-human ratio is even higher in Portland, Ore.

And of course the Left Coast version has something that Portland, Maine, can only dream about for now: legal marijuana.

Gregory Dennis: Recent acts part of tragic history

Posted on July 14, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

What can a white man, in the nation’s second-whitest state, say about the tragedies of violence and racism that continue to tear our country apart?

I sat down to write this column in Carol’s Hungry Mind Cafe, where the flow of coffee and friends on laptops can stir the creative juices.

But I had to go home to finish this. Because I didn’t want to have to explain to everyone in the cafe why I was crying.

Crying for all the decades of murdered black victims of white police violence — people who died because they were black.

Gregorgy Dennis: Advice for newlyweds

Posted on June 30, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

There once was a time in life when everyone was getting married. Then there were a few, inevitable divorces.

Now it’s time for everyone’s kids to get married.

This year for me is full of those weddings — the 20- and 30-somethings launching into full adulthood by tying the knot. Two weddings of that kind this month alone — one in Mt. Hood, Ore., and the other last weekend in the Berkshires. Another one coming up this fall.

Gregory Dennis: When the call comes about mom

Posted on June 1, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

You know the call is going to come. If you’re a Baby Boomer with an aging parent, it’s inevitable.

When your mother is 92 and living on her own a thousand miles away, you know the news is out there in the unknowable future.

And then one Monday the phone rings and the future becomes a little more knowable.

“Greg, this is Audrey, your mother’s housekeeper. Miz Dennis is in the hospital and not doing very well.”

Gregory Dennis: Phoning from the Land of Enchantment

Posted on May 5, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

When did everybody suddenly own a smart phone? We’ve gone from a world in which people sat and talked with one another to a world in which we sit side-by-side, ignoring each other and staring at our phones.

This may actually represent progress. Before we could access the interwebs on our phone, every mobile user seemed to think they were required to communicate by speaking loudly at all times — “cell yell,” they called it.

Gregory Dennis: Echoes of the ski winter that wasn't

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

Most of us have moved on from winter. But for skiers, the memories of the past season echo like one long car crash.

Most Vermonters have enjoyed a winter of lower heating bills and the occasional day without wool hat and gloves. Skiers and boarders, though, have suffered through the worst winter in living memory.

Someone reported that this was the mildest winter since 1955-56. I can’t really confirm that, having been three years old at the time.

Gregory Dennis: Legalizing weed and weaning off coal

Posted on April 7, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

It’s that time of year again, when things start to get really interesting in Montpelier.

The Legislature that brought the nation groundbreaking laws on marriage equality, health insurance and GMO food labeling will decide another highly charged question in the next month:

Should Vermont be the first state to legalize marijuana by legislation? (Colorado and Washington legalized pot by statewide plebiscites.)

Also on the docket is a controversial bill to give towns some say in the siting of solar and wind energy projects.

Gregory Dennis: Our hospital seeks a port in a storm

If Porter were a patient, you would say she needed continuing medical attention.

The nurses have been unhappy with working conditions for several years, and this year the medical system’s doctors have gone public with their own concerns.

Greg Dennis: We can make nature sacred again

Posted on January 28, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

If you follow the wide trail through thick pine woods above the Robert Frost cabin in Ripton, a more rugged path breaks off to the right.

It’s as much stream bed as it is trail. Especially in this stop-and-start winter when frost and mud and tree roots confound the skier and hiker.

Rambling up that trail eventually leads to what is, for some of us, a sacred little spot.

Today in that place sits just the sorry shambles of an old house.
