Around the bend: Thumbs up for one-of-a-kind trait

What do super-hot actress Megan Fox and I have in common? Other than our shared conviction that she is much sexier than me, not much. But there is one thing: Brachydactyly type D.

This is not a type of dinosaur; it’s actually a condition, one I’d like to say is characterized by flawless skin, come-hither eyes, pouty lips and a perfect figure. But I’m afraid it just means we have unusually short, fat thumbs.

Around the bend: A little 'insanity' preserves harmony

Posted on March 25, 2010 |
By Jessie Raymond

My husband Mark and I have discovered the key to a happy marriage: Insanity.

I don’t mean our mental state after 15 years of being shackled together in wedded bliss. I mean “Insanity,” the hardcore fitness program you may have seen advertised on TV. As far as I know, it’s the first home workout that comes with its own defibrillator.

Around the Bend: Turkey love heralds spring's arrival

Posted on March 11, 2010 |
By Jessie Raymond

Not sure whether spring has arrived? Just ask a turkey. Judging from the way ours are acting, it’s been spring for weeks.

Mingling among our dozen or so free-range chickens, we have eight Slates and Bourbon Reds, two breeds of heritage turkeys. These old-fashioned breeds of turkey are heavier and tamer than the wild turkey and smarter than the genetically “improved” supermarket turkey, which in terms of adaptive intelligence ranks just above a cinder block. They let us know loud and clear when mating season — what we more politely refer to as “spring” — has arrived.

Around the Bend: Bread-baking mania sweeps office

Posted on February 25, 2010 |
By Jessie Raymond

Not many people bake their own bread these days.

I’m not surprised. To read a cooking magazine, you’d think it requires a $49 digital kitchen thermometer, a convection oven and a kitchen scale accurate to 0.05 grams. We forget that early man was cranking out homemade bread way back in the days when the wheel was still being tested in focus groups.

Around the Bend: A closet full of 'unmade decisions'

Posted on February 11, 2010 |
By Jessie Raymond

They say everyone has skeletons in their closet. I probably would, too, but I just don’t have the room.

My bedroom closet is packed right now. I’ve been meaning to clean it for months, but you know how busy Vermont winters are. Most nights and weekends I’m out straight watching TV and sleeping.

Until recently, the closet would have been called a walk-in. Sort of. Not the kind that you actually walk into to get dressed, or the kind with a full-length mirror and floor-to-ceiling shoe racks and adequate lighting.

Around the Bend: Recalling ghosts of childhood past

Posted on January 28, 2010 |
By Jessie Raymond

As a child, I was afraid of ghosts. During that phase — where “phase” is defined as “from my earliest memories until high school” — I was convinced that invisible, malevolent forces were coming to “get” me whenever I was alone.

It started innocently enough when I saw a “Bewitched” episode in which an enchanted chair moved around by itself. That was supposed to be amusing? A possessed chair is funny? For years, I refused to enter the dining room by myself.

Around the bend: Making sense of memory lapses

Posted on January 14, 2010 |
By Jessie Raymond

“Cybill Shepherd!”

There are worse things a person could spontaneously shout while standing in line at the grocery store. As it was, my outburst caused the checkout clerk to drop a dozen eggs and a person in the next line to look around and say, “Where?”

But it was a moment of triumph for me, a welcome relief after three long days of frustration.

It all started on a family road trip to Massachusetts, when we passed a driver who looked kind of like Bruce Willis.

Around the Bend: Reading proves cure for insomnia

Posted on December 30, 2009 |
By Jessie Raymond

Despite my love of sleep, once the lights go off I often find myself doing the other thing people typically do in bed. And I don’t mean counting sheep.

I mean worrying, of course.

There is no trouble so overpowering that it can’t get infinitely worse in a dark room with eight hours of quiet for it to fester in.

Around the Bend: Home improvement, holiday style

Posted on December 17, 2009 |
By Jessie Raymond

Last Saturday morning, I woke up feeling downright peaceful. Here it was, less than two weeks before Christmas and, because I had shopped early and planned carefully, I was coasting into a low-stress holiday.

The presents were purchased and wrapped. The tree was decorated. The cookies were baked. I had nothing left to do but relax and bask in this unfamiliar sense of calm.

So I decided to paint the living room.
