MIDDLEBURY — Statewide campaigns in Vermont are inevitably chock full of potluck suppers, parades, worn shoe leather and sound bites. Lots of words and speechifying.

Vermont Lt. Gov. Phil Scott is going to be doing all of those things during the next few months. But he sums up the essence of the 2016 gubernatorial race in just two words.

Exchange Street looked at as tax assessment district

MIDDLEBURY — Some Middlebury business owners are floating the idea of creating a new tax assessment district that could generate more revenue for public infrastructure improvements — including perhaps water main upgrades — along Exchange Street and within the community’s industrial park.

Such a tax assessment district would become Middlebury’s second.

Feds deny grant for Bristol water system fix

MIDDLEBURY — Sue Minter coordinated upgrades to hundreds of miles of the state’s roads and dozens of its bridges during her brief run as secretary of the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans).

Middlebury energy chair to protest gas pipeline

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Energy Committee Chairman Jason Kaye last week served notice to the Middlebury selectboard that he will participate in peaceful efforts to disrupt construction of the Addison Natural Gas Project pipeline into town, and asked board members if such activity might preclude him from serving on the panel.

At their June 14 meeting, selectboard members replied they will continue to endorse Kaye’s stewardship of the committee, provided his pipeline protests stay nonviolent and within the spirit of civil disobedience.

Ferrisburgh activist is running for Vermont House seat

FERRISBURGH — For 27 years, Monique Thurston beat a steady path from Mexico, Maine, to the state’s capital of Augusta in order to advocate for a variety of issues — most notably, lowering sound standards for wind turbines.

Now she’d like to blaze a similar path from her home in Ferrisburgh to the Vermont Statehouse in Montpelier, as a representative of the Addison-3 House district.

Mary Hogan's Mike Quinn retires from 'best job' as PE teacher

MIDDLEBURY — Mike Quinn was driving a taxi in New York City 45 years ago, not sure where life was going to take him.

Well, it’s been a long, enjoyable trip, and Quinn, 68, is now ready to drive into the next chapter of his life after a 44-year teaching career that included 37 years as a physical education instructor at Middlebury’s Mary Hogan Elementary School.

“When I started teaching, Richard Nixon was president, nobody knew of Watergate, and many of my colleagues weren’t even born at that time,” Quinn said.
