MONKTON — Jonnie and Jennifer Corcoran developed a passion for film when they were growing up. Their mother wrote, directed, shot and edited 8mm and 16mm films, as well as plays. She introduced her children to Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Mister Magoo and, as they grew up in Italy, to the pantheon of iconic Italian filmmakers.

Expelled student opts to leave Middlebury College

MIDDLEBURY — A young man who was expelled from Middlebury College last summer after being accused of sexual misconduct but was allowed to attend classes while his appeal made its way through federal court, will not return to Middlebury next semester.

The former student, who was identified in court paperwork only as John Doe, dropped his lawsuit against the college on Monday.

Bill Burger, Middlebury College’s vice president for Communications and Marketing, shed no light on what brought about the resolution.

Addison farm, feds reach agreement on cattle medication case

WEST ADDISON — An Addison County dairy farm and the U.S. Attorney’s Office have agreed on how to settle a concern by federal authorities about medications given to the farm’s cows.

 Amy Menard, the lawyer for the Wynsum Holsteins farm run by Anthony and Barbara Correia and family, noted that the Correias admitted no wrongdoing and no formal charges were filed.

City native and his wife are crack shots with air rifles

VERGENNES — A Vergennes native and his wife returned to the United States from a world air rifle competition with some medals in their pockets.

Doug Miller, who graduated from Vergennes Union High School in 1962, and his wife, Vipha, competed for Team USA at the WRABF World Benchrest Championships in Brisbane, Australia, this past summer.

Nurses charge Porter Medical Center with labor law violations

MIDDLEBURY — A nurses union and management at Porter Medical Center are squaring off over a claim that hospital administrators aren’t following federal labor laws by sanctioning a nurse for perceived union activity and failing to follow the details of a contract.

In this, the first major dispute since the two-year-old Porter Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, AFT, and the hospital signed their first union contract, communication between the parties has been minimal.

New Middlebury rental units offer affordability

MIDDLEBURY — Nearly a year and a half of construction on two new buildings and rehabilitation on three existing structures culminated in the formal dedication of 22 units of decent, affordable housing in the heart of Middlebury last Thursday.

More than 50 people gathered at the complex off North Pleasant Street at John Graham Court on Oct. 22 to dedicate the complex as the Peter Coe Village Apartments.

Two Middlebury water mains break, traffic is snarled

MIDDLEBURY — A messy water main break in Court Square in downtown Middlebury on Monday morning that snarled traffic for much of the day was followed on Wednesday by a second water main break just a block away that caused a second, though smaller, bottleneck for cars and trucks.

“It certainly is unusual to have two so close together,” said Middlebury Town Manager Kathleen Ramsey, of the water main breaks.

Editor's note: This story was updated at 8:30 p.m. to add the news that water service will remain suspended on Thursday for the 10 or 12 Washington Street businesses served by the broken water main.

MIDDLEBURY — Just two days after a messy water main break in Court Square in downtown Middlebury closed off part of Route 7 and snarled traffic, another water main just a block away on Washington Street burst, flooded the street and closed part of the street all day.
